The one person Jimi demanded to play with when he got to England was Eric. I guess you take on the biggest, baddest dog in the park first you don't have to fight all the little ones.

Yeah... being a musician is just one big dog fight. I'm sure that's how Jimi saw it.

It was a metaphor dude. But I do think musicians ,sic Guitarist, are some of the most competitive people on the planet.

Yes, amateur guitar players certainly seem to be very competitive.

But professional musicians are, largely, not. They're mostly open and generous people.

Just as Jimi Hendrix was. He was ambitious, yes, but not competitive. He was a sincere appreciator of other people's music, a humble and gentle person, and not at all the gunslinger that his disciples seem to be. And his interviews show that he thought that whole "world's greatest guitar player" thing was embarrassing.

In fact, here's a quote from Jimi on the subject of jamming with Clapton: "I've played with him and he's good. It's difficult to compare us, because our styles are so different."

So, I was simply pointing out that your metaphor (which I recognized as such... that is, I surely didn't think you were referring to an actual fight) is flawed.

Also, when Jimi got to England, he was nobody, and in no position to demand to play with anyone, let alone rising-star Eric "God" Clapton. His fame came later, afte he'd been in England for a while.

Hendrix didn't ever demand to play with Clapton, he just asked if he could sit in on some jams.

He told Chas he would go to England only if he could play with Eric. And yes maybe my view point is from an amateurs prospective. I don't know any pros and I certainly never will become one. Its still all good though! :-)

That is a tough choice, However I went with Clapton. If Jimi had lived longer we could have seen if he would have held up overtime. I wonder if Hendrix would have done better things or was he peaked? We will never know. Clapton has improved over time.
