Hi FMIII: well that's a tricky one.

Joe runs a very complicated rig which I must admit I thought stupidly baroque - until the first time I stood ten feet in front of it and listened to that sound coming straight off the stage. Oh baby! Gotta be the most beautiful amp sound I've ever heard in real life - and I've heard plenty!

So whatever he has to do to get that tone I guess is justified.

As I'm sure you know the essence of the thing is to run his Marshall amp in tandem with one of the three others that sit on top of the cabs, depending exactly which sound he wants to blend that Marshall crunch with. How you get something that emulates two different amps' sounds simultaneously out of your Cyber Twin... I just don't really know.

Also, Joe uses a fairly large pedal board, the elements of which appear to change all the time. It includes several drive options and a wah pedal which I believe he sometimes leaves on in an in-between position whilst not actually working it with his foot - so that's something else to consider.

Complicated, huh?

I'm not usually very geeky about this stuff, but for once I did buy this DVD in an effort to know as much as I could about what he's up to:

http://www.amazon.com/Joe-Bonamassa/dp/ ... 531&sr=8-2

That gives you a lot of the core principles of his rig, though of course most of the details of amp and pedal specs have changed many times in the last four years. A quick search will find you many of the important sections of that vid on YouTube.

Far as the Cyber Twin is concerned, frankly I think you just have to find yourself a nice rich clean tone with plenty of middle and some popping tops, and then put something like a Muff type drive sound in front of it. And maybe a wah set half open as well.

There's nothing specifically Bonamassa about any of that, but it'll get you to the point your fingers need to take over to complete the journey.

And by the way: folks'll likely want to post on this thread advising you against trying to emulate another player's tone; and that's fair so far as it goes. But I absolutely get why you might listen to the album track of Bridge To Better Days, hear that first solo section and think to yourself: "Holy crap - I MUST have that sound!!!" Perfectly reasonable! 8)

From around 1:45 on this link, for those as don't know...:

Long post. Any help at all?

Good luck - C

PS: if all of the above still ain't anally retentive enough for you there's enough info on Joe's gear here to turn your hair grey:

Now. Warren Haynes - I might just let someone else talk about his tone...

Here's some of it

There's a ton of info around on his rig and effects. It's very complex and I doubt you'll find it on a Cyber Twin.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll take a look at the sites. I thought I might be able to work something out on the British Jubilee Amp setting, a little delay, and my tube screamer.
Take care,
Frank

Hey Ceri, tell me a bit about the dvd please. Does he teach any lessons at all? More info please, I have looked at buying it a few times. I recently got the Blues Deluxe music book and it is very good, but really difficult to work my way through. So far I have learned the intro for Blues Deluxe and a bit of some of the turnarounds during the verses.

Hi again Frank: I guess where I was going above was working on the idea that the basis of all Joe's sounds come from running two amps simultaneously - something I presume he got from Eric Johnson amongst others. They slightly focus on different parts of the spectrum and also the Marshall is providing more of the dirt while the Two Rocks, Buddas, Van Weeldens and whatever else are giving more of the clean flavors.

So while setting your Cyber Twin to a Marshall sim covers that part of the recipe it leaves nowhere to get the cleans from. That's why I was suggesting finding a clean sound from the amp and getting the crunch from a pedal (though that's never going to be the same as having two different sounds coming out of different speakers). Joe certainly uses Tube Screamers, so if you have one of those that's a good place to start. To my ear his finished sound, in the studio at least, sounds more in the Muff ballpark, though I have no idea what he actually uses when recording. Tons of different ones I expect.

All of that is a pale imitation of the real thing - but never mind. Unless you are really going to bi-amp there's a limit to what can be done. Or I suppose you could use one of the newer Boss multi-FX units - a GT-8 or a GT-10. Those allow you to run sims of two amps simultaneously - but then that rather defies the point of having that Cyber Twin...

Again: good luck! :)

Hi BCB: nah, the vid I linked to is about gear and techniques rather than instructional material on the numbers. Here's a clip from it about pedals. Incidentally, I notice his pedalboard here (2006) is significantly bigger than in the more recent clips bobio and 63supro linked to, so it seems he's getting a bit simpler in this department at least:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PC0MRnKm ... re=related

(I'm recognizing some of the signature Bonamassa sounds coming out of a few of those pedals... )

Far as I can see Lick Library haven't brought out a Joe Bonamassa numbers DVD yet - which seems surprising. A licensing issue, maybe? I expect it'll be along shortly: that'll be the one you want when it arrives.

Cheers - C

Excellent! 8)

Do you do the fast volume swells with your pinky? Even I can do that bit - so it can't be very difficult...
