I think it's fairly obvious that Stevie Ray Vaughan had better technical ability, the problem is, the difference between SRV and Jimi is the difference between inventing and building. Jimi invented an entirely new way of playing, and SRV built off that invention and IMHO, improved upon it. However, the pioneer will always be the one that is remembered and given legendary status in the history of their art.

That being said, you only need to watch SRV play Voodoo Child to see he has better technical ability than Jimi, as his cover is light-years better than the original (again, just IMHO).

So my vote goes to SRV. I've always thought he was the greatest guitarist to ever live, and I continue to believe that to this day.

Stevie Ray Vaughan.

I have a Startling admission. I didn't like Jimi Hendrix until I was about 20 or 21. For me he was an aquired taste, like JagerMeister or Thai Curry. I first heard SRV in 1984 when the Couldn't Stand the Weather album came out, and I've loved every note he's ever played. So, in my Book, SRV Forever!!!

...well, I knew this question would pop up sooner or later... so, I'll get my two cents in now, so I can get it over with... Stevie Ray was the greatest player ever. I keep saying it. I shall forever.

And, I would really like to read some arguments as to why people think Hendrix is better...

I can't choose between the two. I mean they were both pioneers in music. I personally think that they were both awesome guitarists.

I have said this before and I'll post it here again:

It's like a master and his student.

Jimi was like the original innovator. His improv, his literally mind expanding, unorthodox techniques. It was something people hadn't seen.

SRV took inspiration from Hendrix along with many other greats, and went with it. Technically speaking, SRV showed mastery of the guitar. He was better in that sense. He played more cleanly than Hendrix.

But then you flip it back, and Jimi could just take something mid song and go with it. Sure, it wasn't clean cut, it wasn't practiced; but that's the beauty. He took things and went with them in directions that others would never have thought to go.

It's very difficult to compare artists from different time periods. Jimi was an innovator, creating a platform, basically an original at what he did. SRV was not the first at what he did, but he WAS the best at what he did.

And on that note, I call it a tie. But I'm more into Hendrix. So Hendrix wins. :D

So?!?! Since when does attention from the media equal talent or musical validity? SRV has never received any media attention, because he never played mainstream music, and he'll never receive as much notoriety as Hendrix, because Hendrix was an innovator.

That doesn't say anything about their musical ability or talent.

It's funny, I'm listening to SRV as I write this post. But I have to say Jimi. He was so inovative and the fact that SRV does a cover of little wing has to tell you something.

Yes, and the fact that SRV's Hendrix covers are improvements upon the originals must also tell you something...

Both, but most days I'd prefer Hendrix, but I couldn't put one over the other.

Hendrix was a blues musician who toured all around the southeastern U.S. before finally getting some props in England. He played somewhat wild, wandering around keys. If you play blues, you know that if you're playing blues in "A" then there's a particular blues scale where you solo. Hendrix didn't play by those rules.

For example, in "The Wind Cries Mary" Hendrix solos over a couple of keys. Hendrix was not reinventing guitar. He was part of an electric blues guitar movement from BB King to Robert Cray to Clapton and others. Hendrix composed great songs, appreciating and incorporating lyrical imagery. He was also very innovative in the production to achieve unique sounds. People think Hendrix fell off Mars with his guitar playing, but check out some vintage BB King blasting out "You Done Lost Your Good Thing Now" and you'll here where Hendrix was from. Hendrix never hid he was a blues musician, but somehow it was not understood where he came from because he had a different personal style and branched in some different directions.

Stevie Ray Vaughn explicitly was a blues musician. He is one of my favorite guitar players. He's a brilliant virtuoso on the guitar, and that's what I'm into because I play.
