Sorry for the lame title, but i didn't know any other way to put it.

What i basically mean is that everyone has these songs, guitar heroes that gives them inspiration and motivation. I first picked up the guitar because i thought it'd be a chick magnet (covering mayer, googoo dolls, $@!& like that).
But then one day my instructor gave me a DVD of srv: Live at the el mocambo. And good gracious, it was a musical explosion in my head.

That's 2 years ago, since then i've developped quite alot of dexterity in my fingers and learnt how to play blues. I spend alot of time improvising over backing tracks, but naturally you run out of inspiration after a while.
During these times usually don't pickp up the guitar for the days, sometimes even up to two weeks , all because of a loss of motivation. Youtubing SRV or john mayer used to help me alot, but that doesn't work anymore for me ;_;
I tried getting into fingerpicking but that didn't help me out either -.-

So here's the question, if you want to feel motivated or inspirated, what do you listen to? In other words, which song/artist makes you run towards your guitar like a madman??

I also came across this series of blues videos on the internet.
They're about this contest called the king of blues, it's pretty sweet since all of these players show what blues can possibly be ^^.
This was the 2006 winner http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7s8m_-s ... re=related

+1

Serious hand-clapping!

"Dreams" by Molly Hatchet does it for me.

Only once in my life did music ever give me an adrenaline rush. I was 13 years old, it was 1972 and I heard Uriah Heep for the first time. The song was The Magician's Birthday and I had never heard a LSD incduced guitar solo like that in my whole life. It kinda freaked me out a bit.

Other than that one lone experience I've never had a rush from music. I've been moved to weep HUNDREDS of times but adrenline? Just doesn't happen.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Funny story about "Dreams" and Allman's version vs. Hatchet's.... a guy said he went to an Allman Brothers concert( newer version of the band) and while they playing Dreams and Gregg was singing,he was at the concession stand and a girl behind the counter said "who is that butchering that Molly Hatchet song?"

I'm betting this zit-popper had triple nipple rings, dual tongue studs, and a life-size tat of Kurt Cobain on her stomach.

What a cupcake!

At BMW, i didn't mean adrenaline rush litterally, but i just mean any song that makes you wanna play guitar real bad and just motivates you to play :p.

Thanks for the many replies guys, keep em coming , cause i'm checking out all the things you've replied :). For me it always used to be SRV at the el mocambo or covered in rain by john mayer. Check the latter one out, it starts quite sluggish, but the solo owns everything :D

The first time I saw SRV it was on TV late one night and I felt like I got hit by a train. I ran to my room, grabbed my Strat and was figuring out the intro of Voodoo Child before they credits finished rolling.

One of the things that has helped me as far as the inspiration to practice goes is finding extremely obscure recordings of your favorite guitar players and listening to those. It keeps it more fresh than just listening to the greatest hits. Another thing is finding out where the things you like about your favorite guitar players come from. I went crazy trying to listen to everyone SRV mentioned as an influence. Albert King, Buddy Guy, Albert Collins, Freddie King, Lightnin' Hopkins, Otis Rush, Guitar Slim, B.B. King, Jimmie Vaughan etc. Then after I'd find out about people like that I'd try to find out who they listened to. And I'd end up finding people like T-Bone Walker, Jimmy Reed, Gatemouth Brown and so on. There's no shortage of people to find out about and people to learn from, and that's just blues! That's not even counting jazz, rock, funk or anything else. Lately I've been really into Larry Carlton. Playing blues is great, it's my favorite style, but sometimes mixing it up with different styles is a good thing to do to keep you inspired too. :)

You're right about influences TGS...
I still pick up cd's of people like Wes Montgomery,Elmore James, and horn players like Miles Davis and Coltrane....they influenced my heroes like Duane Allman.
Then when you hear those old songs you can put your own twist on 'em.
