Anyone know of software that will auto transcribe from a midi guitar pickup to music notation? Please detail the whole setup if you know one that works well.

I know about the Roland ready Strat but I'm not after a synth and it would be a waste in this case. I have the midi to USB already so just after the cheapest way to get a midi pickup with midi messages to the PC then transcribe it.

The Sonuus G2M is promising but would still need the software to convert the midi on the PC. Another thing is it cannot handle multiple guitar strings at once. Which is why I like the idea of a pickup instead.

Or is there accurate software that can do this on a dry signal perhaps?
What are my options. Any gurus out there? Know someone?

Hi Shockwarrior: not that I use notation software much, but when I do I work with an old edition of Sibelius. I'm not the only Forum user here who believes it is the best notation software going.

I've never input notes from an instrument but I notice on this page that Sibelius can take single notes and whole chords from keyboard and guitar (if I'm reading it right). And from a mic too - wow:

http://www.sibelius.com/products/sibelius/6/index.html

Sounds like that's what you need?

If you have questions about it I have found in the past that the gentleman who invented Sibelius also runs the website and is very helpful at replying to enquiries. That experience is a few years old though: I'd be interested to hear if it is still the case.

Good luck - C

Thanks Ceri

Looks like Audioscore is the software that transcribe from an instrument source.
According to the page. You don't even need to play with a midi pickup.
Hope it lives up to what it says it can do.

If anyone else has ideas in the meantime chirp in.

I use Sibelius 5 for making sheet music. But I input notes using a computer keyboard and a mouse, not by plugging an instrument directly into computer, although I tried that and it didn't work. I am still pretty sure you can do that directly as Ceri says, I think I saw it in Sibelius Tutorial Videos. I'm just too lazy to try to figure it out right now. Maybe some day.

Just spent an hour on it and Audioscore gets the big thumbs down.

Fairly easy to use but ironically it converts to midi semi ok but then when transcribing to notation its a complete fail I would have thought that would be the easier part once you got the midi. It messes up the timing and the notes.

The midi part would be ok if it could determine pitch bends in a recording (or live instrument). But instead it chops a bend into several notes of different lengths.

I even tweaked the input so I could get a nice dry signal ideal for converting it made little difference.

Ha, interesting. Like Goran I haven't tried that aspect myself (and I'm still back on Sibelius 3) so I have no personal experience of that part of the thing.

Shockwarrior, taking it further have you tried inputting notes from a mic, which they also claim can be done? Be curious how well that works in real life.

My dad uses Sibelius far more than me, and for full orchestral type stuff. He's had a lot of interaction with the inventor/owner of the system and says the fella is very willing to talk and offer advice, as well as to listen to ideas. All depends how he's spoken to I guess (just thinking back to another Forum user's communication issues with a product seller...), but it might be worth emailing the company and see if there's further to take it.

Please keep us updated with your progress. Very interesting - and we don't cover this stuff enough on the Forum. You're breaking new ground, in this place at least.

Good luck - C

Funny you mentioned that as I did try that and it worked.
I discovered my vocal range at that time I recorded myself wasn't as dynamic as my guitars hahah.

But yeah you can go da da daaaa etc and get a melody.

Part of the problem is I don't have a midi enabled guitar at the moment but that is what looks like the best method. To get it on midi accurately first then worry about transcribing later.

Its just easier for me if I can hit a couple of buttons and then open a page of what I have just played. That is pretty useful when composing.

Maybe I missed something, but did you mic an amp and see what happened?

I have wanted to have my original stuff annotated, just because...

No but its not going to be any better. When I said it worked for my voice it worked in a primitive way. I didn't sound like a cool alien synth or anything :).

I'm looking at buying a Roland GK-KIT-GT3 GR-Synth Driver Kit

Then I will capture the midi as best as I can and look for something to convert it after.
