Elvis Presley died at the age of 42.

The impact that he had on rock music was amazing.

Rest easy, E!

I was outside playing kick the can or ackey with my mates. I was what 5, my mate Lee came running up to me, Nick, Nick, Elvis is dead.
I went in. Still remember it clearly 33 years later. My mom was in the kitchen crying (she had this beautiful black hair that she used to iron flat). Non of us kids wanted to be outside our houses. We were upset for a good few days.
Even my dad was upset by it.

I was seven years old; it wasn't a shock to me. My uncle had some kind of bootlegged/illegal cable TV hookup (I think it was called VUE or something like that, but I may be wrong) and we had watched a live close-circuit concert of "Tha Kang" a few months earlier. I know it was illegal/hacked/stolen, because that cheap son-of-a-gun wouldn't have paid for it!

At the time, I knew nothing about health and fitness, and I thought, "That guy is about to drop dead, right there on stage!" It depressed me, because even at that age, I had always thought "early-years" Elvis was revolutionary and brilliant. Watching him bloat around, sweating horribly, somewhat lost and dazed-looking (now I know it was probably the drugs, but I was a sheltered 7-year-old, so at the time I didn't know) made me worry for his life.

...or maybe John Lennon was right, "Elvis Presley died the day he went into the Army."

...or maybe Mojo Nixon is right, and "Elvis is EVERYWHERE...everybody's got a little Elvis in them...even Joan Rivers has Elvis in her (but he's trying to get out!)"

"It seems that love is like Elvis,
Or at least the love that I've had
Starts out re-inventing the world
And ends up bloated and sad."

-The Grand Street Cryers

RIP, Mr. Presley

I was a kid on a Boy Scout 50 mile canoe trip up in the Adirondack Mountains. We pulled into town for supplies when we heard that Elvis died. No one could believe it.

I remember a lot of news coverage for days and speculation of how he died.

I'll always remember him like this :

No joke, A quote from John Lennon. I think he was talking about rock and roll in his(John's) perspective, not all music. I'm sure you have a opinion too.
