Did anybody went through this type of experience?
There is an upcoming event that I might participate in, however I don't have much details other than date, time and place.
I can probably put together a four piece band for the competition (bass player plays keys as well).

Should I pick to play dance tunes, moderate, classic rock, ballads, or else?

Should you play covers or originals?

Any other tips and opinions are welcome.

When I did a few battle of the bands, it always came down to whatever band brought the most friends for support. It's never been about talent.

covers people can sing along to and get into would probably help you more than an original song (unless its ground-breakingly awesome )

I would go on the hard classic rock, Smoke On The Water etc.

Or else who ever is mates with the judges.
