I would go for an Ibanez before I'd pickup an Epi, but that's just me... I had an Ibanez 335 copy back in the 90s and it was great guitar.

Nice 335 Cedar! I have a thing for natural 335s.

My friend with the Dot actually also had an older Ibanez sort of 335 copy. It was MUCH better than the Dot in every way IMO. It was actually a really sweet guitar whereas the Dot was just good for the money.

Thanks! I think my Ibanez was an AS200 sunburst, beautiful guitar and sounded great! But it didn't sound like a 335 to me, so I ended up trading it in for the Blonde.

I haven't enjoyed any of the new 335s, Custom Shop included, there's no way I would give them my money for a new one! A 335 from the 80s is an excellent buy!

The 80s are an underrated time for Gibson.

I've played some new ones that were great but not for me and a couple that blew my mind. I've played some of the 339s and I love the way they feel and sound but I'm a little on the fence about the body size. They sound SOO good though.

If it were between the Ibanez and the Dot (brand new) I would go with the Ibanez.

If you're not opposed to buying used I'd recommend you look for a nicer Epi model on craigslist. The Epis have pretty bad resale value so you can get a great deal. The Sheraton is pretty cool, especially the older ones. Anything made in Japan by Epi is generally very nice. I'd say just check out your local craigslist and see what's up and if you have a question about something post it here or on the Gibson or Epiphone forums.

Anything that doesn't cost a lot to begin with will have a pretty bad resale value. That's really not important. Do you buy a guitar for resale value or because you like the way it plays and sounds?

Personally, I like cheap, good sounding and playing guitars.
I'd also take a higher end Epi over a lower end Gibson. The Elitist and Masterbuilt guitars are pretty sweet. Also the EPI Tribute Pauls are using Gibby pups ans American made electronics by Mallory and Switchcraft. Nice deal for around eight bills.

What I meant is that the low resale value helps you get a used one for really cheap. Thus it makes a lot of sense to buy a used one and get a much better guitar for the money.

The Epi elitist Dots are sweet. The regular Dots don't really do anything for me. That's just me though.

It's what makes you happy that counts.

You get what you pay for. Any decent Gibson will be superior in every way. Everything on the Epi is cheap. The wood, the electronics, the finish, the craftsmanship, etc. The Gibson 335 is totally top of the line. There will be the occassional dud but for the most part they are incredible guitars.

I see you said you may have come off as a snob. I'm not here to address the question of snobbery. I actually didn't read that into anything you said. I did think what you said was in error, though. The only reason I am weighing in on this thread is because your comment is the exact opposite of my experience and the experience of many others as well. Gibson suffered a TON of crap and abuse during the last decade all related to quality issues and all extremely well deserved I might add. Starting in the mid 90's Gibson's QA/QC department just wasn't doing their jobs and they let a lot of bad gear go out the door. That trend continued well into the late 2000's and many people claim they still haven't sorted out all the issues. It wasn't the odd lemon as you say. It was the odd good one. As it stands today I would rate the build quality and the fit and finish of Epiphones far above Gibsons. Of course the electronics usually are inferior but even replacing the whole system is still cheaper and yields a better instrument than buying a genuine (modern) Gibson.

I have also heard arguments that the maple tops are thicker on the real Gibsons than they are on the Epiphones and so that proves their superior quality. Well, if we were talking about hardwood flooring where you will eventually have to sand it down and refinish it I might be inclined to agree on that one single point but we're not.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

And if you think just because you pay a ton of money for either a Gibson or Fender that it is automatically the finest instrument on the planet you may be smoking the same historic pipe.

It may not be the same grade maple cap, but I seriously wouldn't totally discount the Epi 59 in terms of quality, playability and tone. It's still a pretty fine sounding and playing instrument. I also can't say that Gibson is building garbage. I have yet to find a Gibby built as poorly as some sour grapers describe here. I find just as many an more serious issues in some of the Fenders including the American series guitars.

No, and Epi 59 is not even meant to compete with the Gibson, but it's still a nice guitar.

Crack is whack! :D

Why don't you go play an Epi and an Ibanez and see which one feels good to you and sounds good? Don't they cost about the same?
