I just re-read my post and I realized I come across as a total snob.

Sorry

If you like the Epiphone then by all means go for it! They're cool and you don't feel bad about modding them or beating them up.

It just bothers me when people say the Epiphone is just as good as the Gibson only 10 times cheaper. That's like someone saying their bottom of the line Chinese or Indeonesian Squier is just as good as your custom shop Strat. They're not even close. That's why they are priced the way they are. If you haven't already noticed I'm pretty much a Gibson guy. I'll stick up for Fender too though. I love Fender ;)

im not a epi guy, thats wasthe suprise to me when i actually liked the guitar. the more i find out about gibson the less im liking them.
a sales guy yesterday was telling me about a shipping container that was held up by customs that came in from across seas that had gibson guitars in the that said made in america on them. i dont know when exactly that this was to have happened, but i wouldnt put it past them.

I refuse to believe that Gibson makes guitars outside of America (maybe because I'm such a fanboy)

Seriously though I don't believe that.

The Dot is a nice guitar, the low price makes it a great buy. I like playing them, and I could definitely see using one in the studio.

I'm not sure if you were being sarcastic on that last bit or not. Sorry it's hard to tell on a forum.

Why don't you believe that? It's only on Les Pauls. It's not like it's hard to do or anything. They just drill some holes in the mahogany back before they glue the maple top on. It's only a few holes. You can look up xray pictures of Swiss cheese construction, chambered construction, and solid construction.

Yeah and it's kindof funny because the solid Historic Reissues are often lighter than the Swiss cheese or chambered LPs because they are made of such high quality wood.

Way cool jr I misunderstood. I thought you were saying you literally don't believe that Gibson does that. I don't know how I interpreted it that way.. It seems obvious now. Oh well..

Nevin. Lighter weight doesn't mean better wood but many times better wood means lighter weight :D

So you have a '58 Historic? Awesome! Those are great guitars and I think the plain tops are beautiful. I like the neck profile too. Very meaty! My favorite finish for those is the Iced Tea. I'm GASing for one. The tone is incredible.

Beautiful R8! I love the top and finish. I know what you mean about the aging too. I have to say I think I prefer the R8 over the R9. Of course I'd love to have either one.

I prefer the feel of a good Gibson. My Tele feels great but when I pick up my SG it's like coming back home. My SG has one of those quirky unique necks that feels different than all the others. It's my baby. It's not a fancy custom shop guitar but it does it for me.

The next guitar on my list is a vintage '67 SG Special or Standard.

After that I'm really GASing for a nice LP or 335.

The Epi dot is one flamin' good guitar and dollar for dollar a no brainer when compared to a 335.Contrary to common belief Epi pickups aren't garbage but have surprisingly good output play clean nicely and can really wail when played dirty.I have 2 'bucker equipped Epis and wouldn't change a thing about them.I also have 2 Casinos and they are simply without rivals-they're in a class all of their own.My 65 John Lennon is the best guitar I've ever played,it's just sublime, the epitome of what a guitar should be.

whats your opinion of the epiphone dot?

i too got opportunity to do this same test today. i was shocked to say the least. i couldnt believe just how close in sound and playability these two guitars really are. a blind test and i honestly dont think i could tell the two apart.

i got the chance to play an epiphone dot and i plan on purchasing one in the near future :D :D

ok so they might not compare to a ES 335 gibson, but they seem to be a good buy. i havent read a bad review yet on them.
