whats your opinion of the epiphone dot?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7o7iv0v ... re=related

i too got opportunity to do this same test today. i was shocked to say the least. i couldnt believe just how close in sound and playability these two guitars really are. a blind test and i honestly dont think i could tell the two apart.

Almost the same sound, but close enough to think that they just had the quirks of every guitar being different.

The epi is what about a tenth of the price of the gibson?

That is all I need to know.

the epi lists for like $400 while the gibson is around $3,000

I like Epi Dot's but I also love the Gibby's. I gave My Son a Gibby ES335 that I bought used a year and half ago and it is one fine playing and sweet sounding guitar. I think I can tell the difference between them but not that I think one sounds better then the other just different. People have to remember wood quility can change the cost of something in a drastic way, just going from one grade to the next can be a big difference. Epi Dot might be made of this quility of wood and the Gibby manys grades higher. Lke furniture you can buy good looking cheap furniture that works and you can buy good looking high end wood funiture that also works. What makes it high end the wood. Then craftsmanship its like Fender factory to Fender Team Built.

That said one of My guitars that I play is a Samick Dot.

Okay so a 13th of the price. still way cheaper for just about the same guitar. With the money you save you can mod the heck out of it an still get by spending about 20 or 30 % of the Gibson's price.

If I'm not mistaken, the DOT is a semi-hollow body and the Casino is a true hollow body, so there will be some definite changes in feel and sound between the two (and not just because of the P90 vs. Humbucker difference).

I've played many Epiphones and Gibsons (even though I've never owned either, excepting a catgut Epi acoustic that I bought and sold the same day with a 125% profit  ), and for the money, give me the Epiphones. I have my eye on an Epiphone Wildkat (great for slide!) and I really like most of the Epi hollow and semi-hollow axes I've played.

A friend/bandmate owns one of the Epiphone Junior guitars that has the P90 at the bridge (based on an old Les Paul Junior, except it has a bolt-on neck); after I got used to (and compensated for) the shorter scale, it was one of my favorite guitars to just "grab and go" during recording sessions. He replaced the crappy tuners with some good Gotohs, and it's a rocking machine. Total cost, including replacement tuners--$150!

Another friend owns an "Epiphone by Gibson" semihollow axe of some sort; it seems to be based on a 335, but I'm not sure what it is; he replaced the tone and volume pots, and the thing just screams...I would compare it to ANY $3000 to $5000 Gibson. Total cost--$600!

So the Epis seem to be more bang for the buck, even if you decide to do a few upgrades.

i was thinking p90's and the 3 position into a 2 with the middle as a "off"
selection. i really like the dang thing to be honest. didnt think i would when the guy handed it to me. the neck is a little fat but i have big hands.
i want it in red dangitt! lol
what do ya think about my ideas?

You get what you pay for. Any decent Gibson will be superior in every way. Everything on the Epi is cheap. The wood, the electronics, the finish, the craftsmanship, etc. The Gibson 335 is totally top of the line. There will be the occassional dud but for the most part they are incredible guitars.

Don't get me wrong I think the Epi is pretty cool (my friend has one) but the quality is just not very good. For instance it takes about a month to wear the gold plating off the hardware. The guitar is just built like that.

I love a good Casino. They're very cool guitars. The consensus overwhelmingly seems to be that the standard cheapest model Casinos are total garbage. I don't know if that's true but it's what everyone says. However I hear great things about the inspired by John Lennon models and of course the Elitist models are just as good as a Gibson IMO.

Couple things to note about the Casino... They have a super slim neck. They have a tendency to feedback a lot. Many people put a sock or something inbetween the strings and tailpiece because the strings will vibrate and make an undesirable sound. Yeah they are fully hollow.

Oh yeah on my friends Dot the frets pop out. This seems to really be a problem on cheap Epiphones.

Nothing wrong with the Epi's. I chose an Ibanez Artcore AS73 over and Epi Dot. Seemed to be built better. I liked the neck on the Ibanez better too. Picked up the Ibanez used for $175. It was close to mint. I took the money I saved and bought a pair of SD Phat Cat P-90's . It's now my go-to guitar.
