Unless you have a lot of long stomach hair and play with your shirt off. Most everyone I know takes them off as soon as the at least do their first string change and never bother to put them back. I keep mine in ziplock bag with the screws just to have in case I would sell my guitar. As a safety thing, its no big deal.

I used to keep mine off, But if you wear a Belt Buckle,or Metal Buttons on a jacket, and it scrapes against the springs, you can kind of hear it in the guitar while you are playing. I put mine back on but cut all the holes out into a rectangle a little larger than the string area. It makes it easier to change strings, and I haven't had to remove it again. 8)

When I had a guitar with a back-plate I kept it on. 8)

Jimi Hendrix used to leave his back plates off so he could access the springs and manipulate and pluck them certain ways to add to his sound arsenal.

It doesn't hurt to leave the back-plate off... but it does look kinda messy.

I replaced mine yesterday. I had blocked out the trem and couldn't get to the strings without removing it. I bought a new back plate and made the access slot larger so now I can leave it on. A Dremel tool with a small conical stone does a great job of grinding out the plastic.

I feel much safer :0) and it looks like the original.
