I'm talking about the cheap green MXR overdrive that they have at Guitar Center. I've heard that they're basically the same as their GT-OD but in a different chassis.

Have any of you guys played one? What do you think about them?

I'm going to GC in a few minutes and will probably pick one up. They're like $40 so I figure if I don't like it I'll just take it back.

Just curious to hear what you guys think about them.

Dub,
I just picked one of these up on Friday, though I'm only know getting a chance to use it. I've only used it for about an hour, but so far I think it sounds pretty good and definitely worth $40. I'm playing mine through an older USA tweed Pro Jr with my Telecaster. While I'm certainly not a guitar guru, I think the pedal sounds good and would recommend it.

What kind of music will you be playing with it? What amp? Let us know how you like it.

Great little pedal, very TS9-like in sound and response. Sounds great with a good tube amp.

There's also a little internal switch that will change the sound, if you're a tinkerer. Just Google the "MXR Classic Overdrive Internal Switch" for more on that...

I bought one of these last July and one of the flat black MXR Classic Distortion pedals a couple of years ago...both are great pedals (and they look cool, too). I wish I had been able to afford two of the Distortion pedals at the time, because my drummer/co-guitarist wants it so bad and I just can't give it up!

I got the pedal but I haven't tried it yet (not even in the store!)

I play a lot of different types of music. With this pedal I'll probably be using it for blues (I just play the blues in my room) and rock. I wanted it to get a little more sustain and gain out of my amp.

I play an '06 Gibson SG Standard and an '08 American Standard Tele. I plug these into my ac30. They both sound awesome in the Vox. I have some other pedals but don't use them much because they tend to be a little extreme (like my Big Muff)

Glad to hear you like it Armadillo. Thanks for the tip about the internal switch. I wouldn't have known if you didn't tell me.

I'll tell you guys what I think of it when I check it out tommorow.

One note about the Classic Overdrive pedal--it seemed to perform better with single coils...it didn't sound bad with humbuckers, just better with single coils.

Ironically, the Classic Distortion pedal worked much better with humbuckers (but it sounded thin and weak with single coils).

...of course, your results may vary, and your picking style/attack/other pedals may make the Classic Overdrive work better for humbuckers for you.

Since you have two different guitars (and I assume that they have different pickups), try your Classic Overdrive out with both of your guitars.

Please post your results!

Here's a quick little pic (had to squeeze the Tele in)

Image

As you can see by the settings I was totally rocking out for like an hour and a half. My ears are ringing... (the Vox was already cranked as is..)

I have to say it sounds awesome with my SG and my Tele! This pedal sounds very "transparent" just like they say. It doesn't even sound like I have a pedal on it just sounds like I cranked the gain up higher.

I didn't do much knob twiddling. I was just rockin out. I did try it with more of a boost setting and the settings in that pic. I'll have to do more twiddling in the future.

I'm impressed though. It's just what I needed at a really nice price! I recommend it!

Unfortunately I won't be able to play with it much more today. I have a pretty crazy day ahead of me. I have my first college class today and it is full so I have to go early and try to get in. It is a class about music technology. It's a prerequisite for a recording class I'm going to take.

Also... It's kindof funny the college I'm going to is in Fullerton (home of Fender) and I park in the garage of the Fender museum and walk across the street to school. The Fender museum is pretty cool! Great acoustics in the building.

Sorry for the super long post.

Congrats! I know you'll enjoy it! Keep us updated if you try to do the "switch mod"...

Hmm. I just looked up how to do the switch mod and it looks pretty scary. I don't think I'm gonna do it unless the results are ridiculously awesome.
