I used to live in Austin ... Here is what I suggest:

1) Antone's as previously said is the epicenter of live Austin music. Go there no matter who is on the bill.
2) The main scene is "6th street" with tons of live music and bars. You can't miss it. Hanging out here is the cool place to be.
3) The largest bat colony in North America is under the Congress Street Bridge which is located conveniently downtown. Make sure you check out the bats when they fly off for the evening. Very surreal and unlike anything else ...
4) Best barbecue: The original Salt Lick. It is a bit of a drive, but it is easy to get to and very scenic. Everyone in Austin can give you directions. Also, they don't serve alcohol, but you are encouraged to BYOB. So bring your own cooler of beer -- they want you to. I can not tell you how cool this place is (aside from being the best barbecue on the friggin' planet).
5) The SRV statue along the river downtown is a must see for anyone in this forum, for sure.
6) The local beer is Shiner Bock (brewed near Austin). It is very cheap and better than most much more expensive beers. If you are smart, you'll bring a case home.
7) Places to eat:
a) Stubb's and the County Line are also very good for BBQ. Stubb's is downtown and walking distance from the downtown scene, with the building dating back to the late 1800s. They also have a amphitheater out back for large concerts (bizarre, I know ... but very cool).
b) Papa Deaux's -- This is the best cajun food outside of Louisiana. If you like cajun, you NEED to eat here. Huge portions. it is not downtown, but is close by and VERY easy to get to (lots of parking, too). Make sure to order one of the specials ... they are always amazing. Trust me. Also, they have a Mexican place right next door which is also extremely good, as well (called Papasito's).
8 ) Learn this now. University of Texas football is like a religeon in Austin. The proper expression (used commonly as a greeting) is "Hook 'em, Horns." The hand gesture is below. Knowing this will make you friends.

HOOK 'EM, HORNS!!!

kidding, i lived there as a kid. there are tons of things to keep a person busy. the music scene is beyond cool. my dad lives off of congress avenue and we walk to 6th street.
not sure if it's time (someone correct me) but the bats are really cool.

with respect sir, I am not hijacking anything. if you notice it is the other person you mentioned who makes a point of posting nearly every time I make a post with some petty response to me. it is getting old to me as well and I understand your issue with it, but your problem is not with me. if Brad sees fit to ban that user then it is his decision to make, but even if I don't respond it that users hijacking won't end, look at the post history for said user and you'll see what I mean. i am here to interact respectfully with everyone and enjoy this forum without any squabbling, so your "jackasses" comment when aimed at me is unnecessary.

BCB, I can see plainly that she is usually the one to start these things, but that doesn't mean you have to take the bait. One of the most important rules in any discussion forum is don't feed the troll. She is your troll. Don't feed her.

I apologize for calling you out. You are a valued member of this forum. But you just have to learn to let it go when it comes to knitgirl. 8)

you're right about me being at fault for taking the bait, i have gotten better at it but the past 2 days it has been a barrage of trolling. hopefully this past 2 days will be seen as strike 3 and we wont have to worry about these issues popping up anymore, but if they do i'll ignore them since i think everyone here knows the deal by now when it comes to that poster.

Please. All I did was point out another one of your factually incorrect post when you stated..."well school is back in session", and now i am a troll i love that.
