ANTONE'S, major blues mojo there, a must for any fan of the Vaughan Brothers and Texas Blues

I don't know what venue they use to tape Austin City Limits but that should be one place checking out, that's where I first saw Steve Earle and Stevie Ray on PBS.

Getting tickets is extremely hard and expensive. I think you can tour the venue when they aren't filming, but I've never gotten around to it.

Antone's is great. Try to catch some of the blues artists there, I've never been disappointed. :) And there's an open mic blues jam on Mondays at 8, so bring your guitar!

Someone you need to catch if you get the chance is Carolyn Wonderland, she's a great singer/guitarist and she plays tons of shows in Austin.

And Waterloo Records is a cool record store. They carry CDs, vinyl and music DVDs both used and new. I always have to watch how much money I take in there with me, because I rarely make it back to the car with any left.

Ray Hennig's Heart of Texas Music is where Stevie Ray Vaughan found his "Number One" strat. Saw some mixed reviews about prices and service but it would be cool to just be there to me.

You will have a great time in Austin, markdavid. I agree with all the recommendations to go to Antone's. It's a great venue with lots of good acts. There are tons of other good music venues on 6th Street.

Pick up a copy of The Austin Chronicle at any restaurant or club. It will tell you everything you need to know about the local entertainment scene.

Apart from the music, you absolutely must check out the food scene. A visit to Austin without eating at Torchy's Damn Good Tacos is a wasted trip. My personal favorites are the Democrat (on corn) and the Brushfire, but everything there is good.

Have fun, and please do your part to keep Austin weird! 8)

Some of the best pizza/Italian food in Texas!

Right across the street is Antone's Records--great record shop associated with Antone's Blues Bar.

In the same little strip center there is Sonny's Vintage-they have vintage microphones (cool for us harp players!), vintage clothing, vintage music gear, etc.

Go south (I think :?: ) on Guadalupe, that's the area they call "the Drag"; all up and down across from UT (go LONGHORNS!) there are cool little shops and cafes; in a vacant lot on that strip there is sometimes a little flea market/hippie sale thing going on, especially on weekends. Cool jewelry, knick-knacks, handmade art stuff.

Go up in the UT Tower if you can...get reservations, because the tours are usually full pretty far in advance...no pocketknives or anything like that are allowed, and you will have to go through a metal detector (dang that metal plate in my head! ).

For late-nite no-frills dining (after a night of revelry down on Fifth and Sixth Streets), try The Onion pizza shop--408 Brazos Street.

Since you're undoubtedly a guitarist of some sort, just drive up and down Lamar Street, south of downtown; there's several hours worth of guitar shops, and most of them are independently owned or have a luthier or boutique amp maker on staff...you'll see some stuff you've never seen in person before! You will get a flare-up of GAS.

GO watch the world's largest urban bat colony come out at sundown under the Congress Street bridge...go early and bring a chair or blanket; you can also get a seat on a boat that floats directly under their flight path on Town Lake (aka Lady Bird Lake)...the statue of SRV is also on the banks of Town Lake, but I can't remember which street.

If you are a fan of the Arc Angels, you probably remember the Charlie Sexton song "Paradise Cafe"...it is a real cafe on the corner of 6th and Trinity...it's uncanny how the song describes a typical night in the restaurant...food's pretty good, too.

Believe it or not, the "elementary school field trip" tourist stuff, like the Texas Capital building, etc. is pretty interesting, and the Bob Bullock Museum is cool, if you like history/museums.

Take a bunch of quarters because parking stinks in almost all the areas I just mentioned, outside of the Lamar guitar shops.

Austin is my favorite place on earth (if you can't tell  ); I hope to get to live there one day...although Fort Worth ain't bad, either!

I had hesitated to mention it, but I also love the Bob Bullock museum. 8)

 ONLY YOU would take the time to look something like that up. Most students move in 2 weeks in advance and Austin is full of full time ladies especially around the campus. Nothing to lose at all by checking out campus.

Only you would carelessly print erroneous information, like school is back in session when it is not.
