I wish I'd figured this out sooner. I've been struggling with the solo from Secret Agent Man for a while now, but I really want to learn it. I can keep up with the second half for the most part, but I can't seem to make much progress on the first half.

After reading somewhere a casual mention of slowing down MP3's I looked at the Windows Media Player on my computer and Lo & Behold...I can adjust the speed of the song. Holy crap, I can't tell you how much that helped me. Having that tool is going to make a huge difference in my practice. Songs I had previously written off as too difficult for now....I can take a second look at. Sweet!

Am I the only one who didn't know about this?

I use a program called Transcribe. 30 days free trial but well worth the money. You can slow down the song to any speed, play sections, use markers etc....I haven't discovered all its features yet but what I used so far has been outstanding. Seventh String software is the publisher. 50 bucks.

Some people recommend Audacity, which is a free recording program. It can also slow songs down without changing pitch. I use a Tascam guitar trainer that allows me to slow down and loop parts of songs. Works better for me as I don't have to try and learn how to use Audacity!!!!! (Also keeps me from being chained to the computer)

I use VLC player and you can slow down songs with that too. It has set amounts though, like 67%, 50%, 33%, and 25%.

If I need to slow it down different % I use adobe audition. I also use Adobe to slow down some backing tracks and resave them as mp3s.

Like I was learning Hideaway and slowed down the backing track to 90% and saved it.

I had a buddy back in the day that had a (quite uncommon) variable speed high-end cassette deck that simply had a dial to slow it down. Needless to say, he leveraged that into knowing how to play note-for-note every cool guitar solo at that time. It pissed the rest of us off ... haha

In the matrix we have to speed up mp3s by about 3014% so that we can learn them, because we hear the sound before it is made.

I'm at work...
