I’m not sold…. Sounds flat and lifeless to me… harsh and kind of solid state sounding and over compressed. I think there are much better sounding tube amps in a similar price range that sound much better…. In my opinion the best amps for little money going these days are the carvin Amps

Cheers
Bill

carvins are nice. i have several x100B stacks from the 80's.
remember this post was about crate when i said it wasnt bad.
you mentioned that there were several other better amps............
crate has all but fallen off the planet over the last decade plus.

Way Cool, your right…its not bad at all for the money.. you are gonna’ be hard pressed to find a tube head in that price range.. they do a nice clean and I know a lot of jazz guitarists use them for that purpose. It Would be nice for country and even some blues as you could add a bit of clip with a pre amp pedal. To my ear it just sounds a bit compressed and solid state for any gain sounding rock or metal stuff but you could run your favorite overdrive or distortion in front of it for your heavier need and at 200 -400 dollar price tag that is hard to beat even for a one trick pony .

Your right they have fallen off in the last several years and I think most purest look past them cuz they have mostly been a producer of solid state amps and solid state sounds, well…… lifeless and mechanical for lack of a better term. I don’t think they have really put the time and R&D into analog sound and it is hurting them in an industry teaming with competitors.

I have an old Crate 2x12 combo ( and although I don’t gig much anymore) when I did it went with me to all my gigs. I did not play my guitar through it but because the cleans were so crystal clear I would run my IPOD on shuffle through it between sets for some tunes to keep the crowds at by. An I used it this summer at my nephew’s grad party for the same thing. I know that’s a waist of an amp but I have a bunch of amps and at least it gets used for something right?

As far as other amps in a similar price range that I like better (and this is only my opinion now as tone and sound are a very subjective thing) here are a few as I already mentioned the carvins

In no particular order
Vox AC 15 / AC 30 / Vox Night train
Orange tiny terror
Peavey 6506 / Peavey vypyr tube 60 / Peavey Windsor
Egnator rebel 20
Black star HT 5
Marshall class 5
Bugera v 55
