I'm all for conservation, but give me a break. I can't stand tree huggin' hippies, the government, and Al Gore! They need to back off on Gibson. Like they're the reason the rain forest dwindling. How about the corporations that deal with mining, and McDonalds clearing pastures for cheaper livestock. Does the government go after them?

This tree hugging part of the Lacey Act was slipped through in a Farm bill in 2008 and is the first bill of its type in the world to comdat illegal logging. Most furniture manutactures have said this bill is unrealistic.

Quote
Christopher Smith, a compliance specialist with Ikea Wholesale Inc. in Westhampton, N.J., said in comments posted on a federal Web site that record-keeping requirements in the revised Lacey Act will overwhelm supply chains and cause the cost of wooden goods to skyrocket, unless the regulation is narrowed
He said the law would require Ikea to transmit 33.6 billion lines of data over the course of a year if the company were to track wood species from the its network of 1,380 suppliers of components and finished goods in 54 countries.

"Trying to trace this information to certify compliance all the way through the supply chain to the harvesting of each and every tree is unrealistic," Smith said

I agree. It is totally unrealistic. It 's funny how Washington D.C. passes all of these bills, but has no way to enforce the previous ones, or the new ones they've passed, let alone, have the funding alocated for the enforcement. It seems their favorite saying is a lot like our youth of today: "Whatever?"

I wish these people would pull their heads out of their @$&#% long enough to take a breath to give their brains some oxygen so they could think more clearly. They're more concerned about votes and money in their pockets through lobbyist's than serving their constituants.

I don’t think there operating any different than any other guitar company. Many companies are going to great (maybe illegal) lengths to obtain hard to find woods. I believe Gibson in their arrogance just pissed someone off along the way and this was their wake up call that they don’t call the shots. ( 6 guitars really) if you’re using and buying illegal wood I don’t believe you only use it to build 6 instruments. Seems to me someone blew off their kickbacks in an attempt to exert dominance and was sent a wake up call that they need to play the game by the Mob’s rules or have their business threatened.

In what way do you feel Gibson is being arogant?

I think it was because Gibson is known to make some High end instruments out of top quility woods, many of which are exotic in nature. Gibson has been awared for there backing and support have envoromental protection in the past.
