Well to answer your question... All kinds of chords...

Try a simple I IV V progression... One of my favorites is E7 A7 B7...
Google "blues chords" and you can get a chart

Good Luck

Bill

I've found that 7 chords and 9 chords work nicely most of the time. 9 chords sound jazzier than 7 chords do. And sometimes you can throw in something fancy, like that chord in Purple Haze that most people just call the "Hendrix Chord". I can never remember the real name for it, but it sounds really cool.

Also, learn to play the same chords in different positions. That way you aren't always playing the same thing, and you're also not always having your hand have to fly from one end of the neck to the other.

"i'm getting good at soloing blues", j_rockr91, the key you are soloing in is the chord that you play to accompany those solos. texasguitarslinger wrote: "I've found that 7 chords and 9 chords work nicely most of the time" is what to do with that chord/ chords and you will find it accents your blues solos, but feel free to experiment.

Look up the chord tabs for "Stormy Monday" that will show you most of the basics....but it's not only 3 chords, that's the very basic part...the 1..4..5 progression of any key is what you will usually be chording.
Minor 7ths and 9ths...mostly.

Find music theory thread that one of our fine forumites wrote and experiment. Take the scale of your choice play blues I, IV, V progression
(EX, E scale E, A, B) modify chords and see what sounds good to you. This is little bit longer way to learn but you will learn it better.

Hope that helps

The Hendrix chord that TGS mentioned is E maj. 9 and it's probably the coolest chord ever made along with the weird C# 9 in Spanish Castle Magic and the F# min. 7 in Foxey Lady.

Blues guitar chords have a distinct sound. That sound is the Dominant 7 chord (R 3 5 b7). Dominant 7's are Major Triads with a flat 7.
