This is not often you see a Dumble Overdrive Special for sale! There were only about 250 amps made during 35 years... SRV had one...

Well, I can´t afford to buy it... 30.000 Euros start bidding price... but at least I can oogle it... :P click the image to see the auction...

One of the advertisers in Vintage Guitar Mag has had an Overdrive Special and cab for $50,000 for quite some time.My Vox AD120 VTH has an Overdrive Special model on it and for $400 I'll make do with that, I can't see the difference being worth $50,000 when for that price I could buy some pretty pristine vintage Marshall and Vox amps.

If I paid 50K for an amp it better sing like a chorus of angels........

....I might be a bit out of touch here but it seems like quite a bit of cash for anything let alone a guitar amplifier.

That's real estate down payment money, or one special car.

Well now. Interesting gossip: an outfit in the UK called Music Ground ceased trading earlier this year amid rumours of police raids, legal action and such. Music Ground owned many UK music shops up and down the country including half of Denmark Street in London (tinpan alley). Their owners also own the present day Hiwatt Amps operation.

(Allegedly) those enterprising gentlemen had been using the Hiwatt factory as a base to build counterfeit high end amplifiers, including Dumbles. Apparently, people had paid £30,000 / $50,000 for "classic" amps that had been put together over long weekends in a very different location to where real Dumbles came from. Customers are reputed to have been located worldwide. (Bought a "Dumble" amp in recent years? Want to take a closer look at it?)

The thought provoking bit: the point of paying that mind-boggling price tag is to secure an amp who's tone is so pure and perfect it can't be obtained any other way. And folks were apparently very satisfied with the tone they got - until they found their amp had nothing to do with the brand name on the front.

But if they couldn't tell the difference - what was that eye-popping purchase price for...?

Discuss.

Cheers - C

PS Thanks to Forum user Twelvebar for putting me onto this tale.
