ok as many of you already know, i have a great opportunity to get myself
a blk face bassman, 1965. i will then have a 2x12 made and both recovered blonde. i dont know what speakers to use so i will be seeking your help on tha as well.
ok so heres your last chance to talk me into/out of buying this amp.
ive never owned one. i do like the way they sound.
this will be my first amp this old lol. for those that have them or in the know, whats the pros and cons of this amp? what is it capable of?
anything you want to tell me about these amps nows the time to do so.
dont let me walk into something i might regret later.
can these amps handle small and med gigs? at loud volumes
how is the tone on these? i cant turn it up to loud where im buying it at, maybe 4 or 5.

Full blast it will be early Marshall tones.

And yeah you could gig with it. I wouldn't want to stand near one cranked with a cabinet....

lol you should stand near my carvin stacks cranked.
hair moving experience. its the moment you hear your fingers slide on the strings a bit, just before the first power chord, that you feel the carnage
thats about to be unleashed. i miss that feeling. you never really got use to it ya know. its been a very long time. maybe one day i'll get them all retubed and put them in front of meters to see what they are really pushing.

please dont tell me i'll have a marshall tone with that bassman.

Those 2 reasons alone are enough :D

I can only share my experience with recently picking up the Bandmaster, I think they're similar but someone with more experience will have to confirm... if you're looking for that vintage Fender sound you can't go wrong! and when you crank this thing up it will take you to places you've never been! At the store where I picked mine up we had it cranked thru 2x12 cab and it was just amazing!

I find it very hard to believe that it will sound anything like a Marshall, so if that's not what you're after I say go for it.

Oh and here's another bonus, I plugged my 335 and it's the best tone I've heard coming from this guitar! :) it actually works better than the Strat, I kinda still prefer the Strat thru the DRRI, but I'm sure things will change once I get the right cab for it.

+1 Worst case it's never been recapped. May need to be retubed too but who knows? Change to a 3 prong cord if it hasn't been done. I never heard any BF amp get into Marshall territory cranked unless it was seriously modded. BF amps are pretty clean. Try to crank it if you can before you plunk down your cash. That's when all the faults will become apparent. Listen for crackles, pops and other weird sounds. They were 50 watts. Plenty of power for most situations.

Here are some specs from Ampwares

way cool jr, if you are planning on gigging with an amp made in '65 no matter how cool it sounds you will have to bring a back-up along just to be safe. As a cameraman for a live rock and roll cable TV show I got to see a lot of guitarists and their special vintage amps and every time one would stop working and they would have to swap with a back-up (1 guitarist brought 4 different amps with him and wouldn't you know it , he ended up using all 4, all of the stopping and starting ruined their 30 minute set) I would think "why don't they just get 1 good amp that works all of the time?". I know money is a factor so you have to do some homework on this.SWR and Sunn are both owned by Fender so the Fender bass guitar amps are better than ever, but you look at the backline's for rock bands and mostly see, well, you know what I mean. Shop around and you will find a deal on some thing newer and dependable.

Just buy yourself a new amp or a recent used one. Leave the vintage piece to someone who appreciates it for what it is. Recovering it blonde to match your idea of what color cabinet you want is just wrong.

every bit as good advice as any of theabove.

this amp has been reworked by the current owner.
he use to be a peavy warranty repairman so im sure he knows his stuff.
a lot of the stuff known to go bad has already been replaced.
i have my carvins and my blues jr as back if i should need them, and a host of peavy amps. wow 4 amps in a 30 minute set is very bad. sounds like the guy wasnt ready for the gig.

Ain't Marshall either. Cut me a break, the amp was on 10. Most people won't set it on 10 in a small or medium club LOL. My Champ's like that on 5. Still ain't a Marshall. Even my Twin would break up at 10, any amp would. It won't sound like that at half volume.
