Your group/combo/duo/whatever would have to be able to play at least 45 minutes worth of music: whole songs.

That would be for one set -- as an opening act or part of a bigger program (like a charity or community thing). In a Battle of the Bands or Talent Show kind of thing you can probably get by with a 20 minute set.

You'd be wise to be able to play them well so as not to embarrass yourselves too.

Eventually, you'll need to play about 4 hours worth of material to a full bar gig.

Your ready when you know for a fact that your not gonna get up there and make a fool of yourself. In other words, get some mojo under your belt first. You wouldn't go into a gunfight without bullets now would you???

As far as getting gigs, just hang out wherever bands are getting payed, then ask questions. Although each situation will require a different strategy (this is usually where your mojo comes in handy).

Remember, never get the cart ahead of the horse.

You wouldn't be getting any more gigs.
I've been gigging for years and I find that currently they are getting harder to get.....unless you want to work for near nothing. Alot of places I see now try to hire bands really cheap (<$500) because they know they can always hire a D.J. cheaper than they can get a band and the typical club goer of 2007/08 doesn't really know the difference anyway.
The difference is if a band has an established following and can draw 1000+ at the door. Then they'll kick in up to a couple grand. Maybe.

Greg has a good point. You need to be in demand.

What you need to do is get a solid evening of tunes down first. Ask yourself honestly if your band is one that you would go out someplace and pay money to listen to.

Find places to get in front of people. You may need to offer to play for free at neighborhood festivals and such just to get the exposure. If people like you, they'll come to herar you, and start bringing friends.

Having a regular following that talks about you and where you are playing next is the best advertisement.
