good topic

i just started picking up my SG the other day, and cause of that i reckon you should have a wide range of brands, but fender is in my opinion the best at quality and tone.

Does anybody play/use Fender & nothing else? I'm talking bass/guitar, amp, strings, the whole 9 yards. Thinking about trying this myself & was wondering if anyone had an opinion. Thanks!

Years ago I used to as it was more out of convenience than anything else. There were only two music stores near me at the time, both of whom were Leo and then CBS Fender Dealerships. As Fender at large was the only "high end" brand both these stores carried, I either had to use all Fender products or go for a LONG ride otherwise if I wanted to delve into any other high-end brands' stuff. It didn't bother me at all as even then, all the Fender stuff came through for me as required.

I play Guild guitars other than my Telecaster. If I were to buy more Fender guitars they would be vintage Telecasters

Not me. I can't stand their cords or strings. I do have an old Fender Fuzz Wah I use from time to time. I use all different kinds of guitars and I just sold my Twin that was my only real Fender gigging amp. The only Fender amp right now is my 74 Champ it's great for low volume rehearsals ans small gigs. That will change though. I plan on building a Tweed Deluxe 5e3 clone sometime this year as long as I get the time. I may build other amps too. I'm getting real tired of Fenders new construction techniques and components.

But play and use nothing but Fender? Nah. I need more colors in my tonal pallet.

For a person who's looking for the best tone for themselves, it might be an all Fender rig... but not for me!

I grew up using Fender, but for a nice fat and thick growl, I could use my American Classic Stratocaster... OR I can pick up my SG. Fender amplifiers are so beautiful sounding clean, but there are amps out there that can do much more for what I'm looking for. There is one piece of Fender gear I would never give up: My strap lol.

I can't play just Fender, there is certain tone a Fender guitar just can't give that you need other brands for.

No way, I hate fender picks, pedals and cables. I don't really like Fender acoustics. I prefer Orange amps.

I'm still considering the Rumble 350 amp. Will NOT give up my Fender Basses or my Levy's straps. I'm just having trouble deciding on strings & I don't have the cash to just "try" a new set every week. When I get a new set, they are on there for a while. Hmmm...you guys have given me a TON to think about. THANKS for the advise!

I really got turned off of the Fender bass amps when they stopped the Bassman stack amps, and then the Bassman Combos. Bassman TV tweed ain't my thing for that price.

For those of you who do only use Fender, why?

I have Fender Guitars and Gretsch Guitars and a few Peavey Guitars. Amps, mainly Fender a couple Marshalls and a few Peaveys. I tend to prefer Fender Strats and Teles and depending on who I am playing with I usually go through fender amps...but if I am playing heavier stuff I am all on my marshalls..:)

For the main stuff, if you're talking electrics, I use Fender or G&L.

The reason why is pretty simple. I don't much care for Gibson electric guitars.

I'll admit, I wouldn't mind owning a Firebird and a Nighthawk. Aside from those two models, Gibsons usually have necks that aren't friendly to my hands at all (again, with the exception of the few Firebirds and Nighthawks I've tried), especially SGs. I remember playing a SG Classic with P-90s that absolutely abused my hands into oblivion once, a real baseball bat.

Les Pauls are a little better neck-wise, but their weight will break you down. I do like the tone of humbuckers, though, but I would try like hell to find another Superhawk before I'd break down and try to live with a SG or Les Paul again.

And what about those other brands? I mostly don't care for them. Ibanez: hell no. Jackson: eh. Charvel: I haven't found an inexpensive Model 1 yet. Kramer: yuck. B.C. Rich: maybe if I smoked meth.

As for amps, I'm not bound to buying just Fender amps, but that's all I own at the moment for whatever reason. I wouldn't mind having an old Music Man 212. That's not terribly different, I know, but the old Music Man amps have some low-end to them that the Fender amps of the era didn't have.

I've also tried some vintage Gibson amps, surprisingly enough, that I liked.

I'd honestly bet on an old Gretch amp being my next amp. There's something to those old Valco-built Gretchs that really click with me. Same for vintage Silvertone amps.

As for pedals, while I would like to have a Fender Fuzz Wah and a Fender Blender, that's subject to whatever tone I'm chasing and mood I'm in that day. In all honesty, aside from my Coil Cable and my Vintage Voltage Cable, most of my cables are old recycled cables with new ends.

And, last of all, I hate Fender picks simply because I've yet to run into any pick that agrees with me as good as a .96mm Dunlop GG.

Fender strings? What're those? :P

I do like Gibson acoustic guitars. Additionally, you can usually find a vintage Gibson acoustic cheaper than you can buy a new one for (unless it's a '54 J-45 of course). Fender hasn't made very many acoustic guitars I've really liked aside from an old AG-15N I tried and the new Kingman. Everything else has been real j-u-n-k. Guild acoustic guitars are also high on my list here.

No.

Variety works, here. That said, Jazzmaster, Jaguar and Strat are quite heavily played, after Mosrite.
