I started doing a Protest theme this week as this is Black History Month in U.S. schools. We have been talking about protest and protest music as a means of social change and covering both the Civil Rights movement as well as the Anti-war movement of the 60s. I chose 14 songs for them to listen to and analyze. Then they will be working with a partner to come up with something to protest in today's American society in the form of a song, poem, rap, etc.
The songs are as follows:
Civil Rights
Strange Messenger by Patti Smith (song about slavery)
Too Many Martyrs by Phil Ochs (about Medgar Evers)
Only a Pawn in Their Game by Bob Dylan (also Medgar Evers)
Southern Man and Alabama, both by Neil Young (racism in the South)
Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd (the response to Young's songs)
Anti-War Movement
Masters of War by Bob Dylan
War by Edwin Starr
Ohio by Neil Young
Handsome Johnny by Richie Havens
Civil War by Guns N' Roses
Ball of Confusion by The Temptations (more about contemporary society circa 1966)
We Didn't Start The Fire by Billy Joel (more about contemporary society circa 1989)

and finally, World History in 6 minutes and 18 seconds:
Sympathy for the Devil by the Rolling Stones.
