Punk was all about saying F-you to the established way of doing things.

it was about not giving a rat's hind quarters about anyone's opinion and just rocking out.

like nevin said old guys would be the most punk rock of all, i played bass for a one off gig last year with old punk bandmates. it was loud obnoxious and terrible, and totally punk rock, and as i was then 38 I was the youngest guy, the singer was 55.

Punk is an attitude! The Ramones, SexPistols, early Buzzcocks, the Slits, Stiff Little Fingers, Patti Smith, Television,The Damned, Iggy & the Stooges, Subway Sect, the Clash, Generation X, Sham 69, "X", the Wierdos, Subhumans, Dead Kennedy's...etc. These are "Punk" bands. If you listen to them and learn their songs, you'll find out they're not all power chords played at a hundred miles an hour. Some of these guys could really write music.

There are some great bands there, but outside of television, who I don't really consider "Punk" (just me, but thats like calling early talking heads "punk") 90% of the bands mentioned there are three powerchord song based. Think about it , The Stooges, The Dammned, The Sex Pistols, The Ramones , Come on man, Three power chords played fast IS PUNK. When I used to go to a punk show ( I did see P.I.L. on the ALBUM tour B.T.W.) if a band started to play a lead, NOT a hook but a lead, I'm pretty shure the crowd would stop considering them Punk. A lot of those bands couldn't write a check never mind music. You know some consider an aboriginie blowing a Diggeriedoo music too but I wouldnt give any music awards out for it. I'm Just Sayin' 8) [/quote]

the sex pisyols are a bit more than three power chords played fast, and there considered one of the greatest punk bands of all time.

OFF TOPIC;
Them diggeriedoo's a hard things to play. my family went on a holiday out in the outback, an i saw a aboriginal playing one an said, "that looks easy", and he gave it to me, i couldn't even make a sound out of it.

of course you can do it, like a couple of posters said, the punk thing is an attitude and if you were into it in the 70s (as i was too) chances r you still have some punk in you. look at lydon these days, sure he's old and a bit tubby but the man still has it. hell he's as pissed off as ever!

Sex Pistols = Sloppy tone and sloppily played rockabilly.

good fun, but not one of the best punk bands ever.

I could be turing this thread into a "who is the best punk bands"... sorry... but the most "talented" punk band imho would be X (from LA).

Yes, If you left that show in better shape than when you came in, you wern't doing something right. I tried to post a link, check out "big takeover live at CB's in '82 on you tube. Great clip. also for good punk, Black Flag, Cro Mags,Fugazi and minor threat, POISON IDEA, Poison Idea even had an album Kings Of Punk, and I don't think there were too many bands that could top them in that era. Certainly not the pistols. Poison Idea makes them look WEAK. 8) Oh, how could I forget to mention Darby Crash & The Germs, or The Exploited etc. etc.

Don't forget No Means No. Great band. Saw them a few years back. I also consider The Stranglers as punk and love them too.

Get it right roon ye Alan mate and go for it! You are never too old for anythin in this day and age. Enjoy it and let loose!

I think it's funny when people say, "I'm too old to..." (fill in your personal blank here). I feel (and look) younger at 40 than I did at 35...I do look older than I did at 30, but I care less about it than I did at 30  .

At the age of 36, I had major surgeries on my neck and shoulder, so I do have physical limitations...I can no longer ride roller coasters or stand on my head, but those were episodic activities at best.

...but artisitically, I have a broader spectrum of abilities than I ever had previously.

I recently jammed with some 18-to-20 year old kids, who were independent rock/punk musicians; at first, I felt a little out of place (and OLD), but I just said screw it and started going at it, and each of the kids were surprised...one of them said he didn't expect me to be able to keep up  :? . That inspired me to pull out all the stops and bang harder and faster for the next tune (I wonder what if Telecaster was thinking, "What are you doing to me?") The other guitarist dropped out pretty quick, saying he couldn't keep up (and he was barely 18!).

The funniest part was when I pushed a song I wrote to them (my style, not theirs); they commented that bluesy rock (and playing slowly) was much harder than they expected...the same 18-year-old guitarist dropped out, because he just couldn't play anything than his "normal" style...that made me feel a bit more "skilled" than "old".

Later, they were surprised when I put a bluesy slide lead over the bashing three-chord-rhythm that they were laying down (open tuning was a new idea to them as well).

Sometimes the old dogs are the ones teaching the new tricks!
