why is it that people feel the need to "digitally remaster" EVERY SINGLE CD reissue?!?! especially in punk and grunge albums where the gritty sound that identify the genres is often lost to the remastering (who the hell wants a perfectly recorded punk album?). more often than not the "enhanced" CD becomes a casualty of the "loudness war" and sounds horrible... take nirvana's bleach for example. in the reissue, the snare drum sounds like a damn cereal box being hit with a twizzler... just because you CAN do something doesnt mean you SHOULD... i have 3 versions of the offsprings smash (my mom bought one in 95, my dad in 97, and i bought one a few weeks ago, not knowing they had 2 copies  )... needless to say, i deleted the new one from my itunes and put the one from 95 in.

so many poor, innocent classics ruined by this idiocy :?

Sometimes remastering can be a good thing. I like listening to both the original and remastered versions and comparing the two. Sometimes you notice things you didn't hear before on a remastered album. But other times I like the vibe of the original better, tape hiss and all.

i'll take remastered just about every time.
i havent heard a disk that was remastered and it sounded worse than the original. if it wasnt worth it i dont think they would bother spending all that time to do it.

Yes - Often the problem was the initial transfer to digital that needs to be re-done. Remastering is a good thing.

I agree with you, some CDs should never be remastered especially those whose original appeal was their rawness. There are exceptions of course, The Beatles remastered set of their albums is just brilliant when compared to the originals. All the instruments on the reissues are clear and right in front of you,you can pick out every nuance and even the odd mistake.Having said that I will hang on to my original Beatles vinyl and CDs as they are almost religious icons to me.

If they remaster them to capture the original sounds better, then its good.

But I hate when they change the songs. The Megadeth Rust in Peace remaster was not nearly as good as the original version. Even some lyrics were changed for the worse....

Change for the sake of change is not necessarily a good thing.

my problem specifically though is when they try to boost the bass and end up making it a flat, dimensionless sound... as i said, i have some discs where the snare sounds like a cereal box :?

I think the main reason for the remastering is so that they can resell you something that you already own.

hey, ya ait gotta buy the remaster remember.
the recordings are hardly any different than if it was recorded in todays times. ask yourself, do you like the song or when the song was recorded?

the song... but for the third time, when they try to boost the bass so that it sounds like a damn fat parade marching down the street in metal boots, they usually make it sound flat and dimensionless.

i dont see a difference with cds being remastered from the 90s, i have pearl jam's albums ten, vs, and vitalogy and theyre fine. Along with soundgarden's superunknown and down on the upside. They all sound fine, i think its cool that they get reissued with rare demos, outtakes, etc etc. I mean look at the remastered beatles albums, they sound so clear. Most people dont want to the gritty sound. Take nirvana's bleach, the sound on the original is too distorted, scratchy, and most of the time unclear. They just remastered it a little clearer with demo recordings. So sometimes its a good thing, i have yet to hear a bad remastered album. But what do i know, i only grew up in 90s and am now living through the digital age of music :D :D

was bleach clearer? yes. but it became a victim of the "loudness war"... an attempt to boost the bass that leaves it sounding dimensionless... and then on with the lights out, if you listen to some of the b sides and then listen to the originals on the singles, the snare sounds pathetic on the remasters on WTLO... oh well, at least they havnt touched black flag... THEN id be mad lol
