So at my local mom&pop guitar shop this blueburst G&L tribute ASAT special (the tele model) has been sitting there for about two years now, and NOBODY has touched it because they think its a "knockoff" tele...

So anyways, the shop owner is selling it for really, really cheap, and I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge they would care to share...

I want to get a Cheaper guitar before I go to college, since I don't want to bring my Strat to college (I spent about $1300 on it, so i'm definitly not risking someone stealing it).

Should I go for the ASAT?

Thanks guys,
Jim

I'm not exactly sure about G&L Tribute 6 stringers, but the Tribute Basses are made in Indonesia. They are a very well made guitar. In G&L if it doesn't say Tribute, it's an American made guitar. Leo Fender started G&L. Tell you anything? Go for it.

Thats why I'm so surprised no one has jumped on it! Technically, it shouldn't be considered a knock off.

I would still like to sometime in the future to own a real American Telecaster though... Probably another 3-tone American Standard with a maple neck to match my strat. 8)

I been trying to find reviews and youtube vids, but most are on the American versions, so I thought why not check with you guys too.

Hi Jimbo, well I never tried a G&L guitar. But...if the price is interesting, you should really try the guitar and if you like what you hear, then make an offer to the owner and see what happens.
A few months ago a Music Man Albert Lee tribute guitar was sold at my local guitar shop. She was hanging on the wall since ages, (at least two years that I can remember). I kicked myself in the butt when a guy came and bought it. It never occured to me that I should have tried it before. They don't order these guitars very often and the chances that they order another one Albert Lee with three P90 pickups soon is very dim. So since that day, when I see a guitar that might interest me, no matter the price tag, I try it.
So I hope that someone will bring his or her experience to answer to your question better than me, but as I said, I would seriously consider the deal. Good luck. :)

I use to use nothing but Fender until I tried the G&L SB-2 Bass. Blew me away. Been playing for 41 + years. Their pups are incredible. My SB-2 is an American bass, cost about as much as your Fender. But for that price, I was able to have it made up to my specs in about 12 weeks time. With a real fitted hard shell case.

I was able to select the neck size, Three or four choices for fingerboards, choices of finishes on the figerboard, the finish on the body, and the pickguard. And that was not considered a custom shop job bass. Also came with a signed certificate from Mrs. Fender with the serial number on it.

Thats what I was thinking about doing too for my strat but I thought it would be better in the long haul to be a little more thriftier and go with a Fender American standard....

I could do that with the tele

& I think its down to like 250  I remember when it was came into the shop too it was like 500 or 600. I been talking to one of my friends about it and he says I can probably get it lower too since Mr. Roper (the store owner) just wants to get it out of the shop.

Electric guitars there don't sell as well as the acoustics. Most of the stores sells are in their band insturments too

I used a Tribute SB-2 Bass. I went with an American SB-2 because I am only keeping one bass now. I honestly had no problems with the Tribute. I just wanted my only bass to be made the way I wanted it. The neck size I chose is a 7 1/2 inch neck.

Offer 175

I just might... :P
That would be an absolute steal too, I would almost feel bad...
Especially considering that the store owner is such a great guy. :?

I bought my G&L a few years back and I LOVE it. I love my telet too but my USA Legacy is soooooo versitile. My wife bought me the tele as a wedding gift so I try to play it when she's around but I always find myself reaching for my Legacy first. The tribute series are made in Indo (as mentioned) but you'd never be able to tell. My step son has a Legacy tibute (blue sunburst) and and SG and he grabs his G&L most of the time.

Check em out, you won't be disappointed.

The G&L are very under rated. I consider myself lucky to have a G&L dealer a few miles from my place. I do bass, but I've seen so many guys come into the store and try the G&L and comment that they like it better than their Tele. The G&L bridges are great. They make their own pups.

Although I have a number of USA Fenders and G&L's, I also have 2 G&L tribute models. The first I purchased online when a store was blowing them out about 5 years ago for $250 (ASAT semi hollow). About 3 years ago, I purchased an S500 from a CL seller that was desperate for money for $100. The S500 was set-up perfectly, and was comparable to the USA G&Ls. Unfortunately, the ASAT had some serious neck problems, and I was told to return it to G&L under warranty. Although it took a while (I think they let it sit and forgot about it) I finally called and their remedy was to put a USA neck on with new Tribute sticker, upgrade to hard case, do thorough set-up and polish, etc. and it came back as good as a new USA model. If the guitar sounds good and you like it, and can get a decent deal, go for it. G&L tribute models are great values.

I'll definitely keep ya'll posted, and if I do buy it, I'll post a pic (along with my Strat too I haven't done any photos yet...)

One major problem will be talking my dad into letting me buy it- I use to own a Squire strat that I'm now letting a kid in the youth group to play since I'm getting him free lessons. My dad thinks that I should take that to college but to be perfectly honest I couldn't stand that guitar. (Squire owners please don't razz me...) I don't want an entry level guitar to bring to college.
