I know that I could've/should've posted this in the bass forum but I figured I'd get more feedback here.I was considering putting new flatwound strings on my 67 Vox Astro IV Bass Model 273.The strings on it are quite possibly the originals as I've owned it for over 30 yrs and the strings were quite old when I bought it.I'm in a quandry as to whether I should keep on the old strings because they sound so funky and are remarkably clean after all these years.Just in case I do decide to change the strings(I'll be keeping the old ones just in case)what flatwound strings do you bass playing folks suggest? Thanks in advance.

I've used D'Addario flats before. Felt and sounded great. Used them on a Fender fretless Jazz. Super tone with a Leo Quan Bridge attached.

I haven't played bass long enough (about 3 years) to have even changed my flat wound strings as I just got my first set for my squier jazz last summer. On it I got "d'darrio chromes" and loved them! Everything I needed and wanted.

Now here is were these strings get a little... Annoying?

I got my '51 P Bass RE in around February of this year and wanted some flats. The store ordered them in and they arrived- they chopped of these old string and as they tried to put on the flats found they were to short... Apprently the regular long scales don't fit on basses with string through bodys!

So about month later some "Extra Long Scale" d'dario chromes came in (on special order) and they popped 'em on. They sound great! But be aware of this problem as it can be very bothersom.

I say the chromes are a great choice! (keep in mind my story).

BTW are you talking about that hofnerish vilio bass you have? That's a pretty interesting looking bass!

Yep that's the one,it has built in G tuner, bass and treble boost and fuzz the action is really close and the neck is almost as skinny as a broomstick,it's just a dream to play and it sounds fabulous. The bass player in my last band offered to trade his 72 Jazz Bass for it,I just laughed at him and told him to throw in his 70 Gibson acoustic and his G&L Comanche and I'd half consider it.
