Clapton will never be overrated to me :D :D

Hendrix is deff overrated. Every guitarist is compared to him, dont get me wrong im a huge Hendrix fan, but his name gets thrown around like candy. Slash, Page, i wouldnt say SRV though, i dont hear much from him on radios a lot

I don't care for Carlos Santana either. He's very typical. Very predictable.

Stanley Clarke plays damn good. I just can't take that clanky, overly-brassed out tone he always has. Gets that sound from a $10,000 bass. Go figure.

I would place Kieth Richards and Angus Young in the same bracket. They are both true rock n roll guitarists, they are not worried about what others think of them (they get paid too many royalties to give a damn), and they both confessed that they think they arent good guitarists. They do admit when playing with Ron Wood or Malcolm Young behind them they sound good as a duo...

Over-rated? I think people expect too much from them- you will get a killer song written by richards, or a guitarist who grabs the crowd like no other would or a ballsy 'in your face' song by the young bros.. But they wont have chops like SRV or Yngwie would :)

Hell, when I went to see AC/DC earlier this year- everyone was screaming for Angus- not AC/DC  you dont get that often these days- infact, I reckon he will be the last of his kind. These days bands are too manufactured and force-fed to us by the industry to have a true following like KISS, The Stones or AC/DC- whereas they are popular because people liked them way before they made money selling records...

These days, you sell records, THEN you get the respect..

Lets be honest here- SRV and Yngwie inspire young guitarists.

But The Stones and AC/DC inspired generations of rock n roll evolution, and everyone who has ever seen Angus play in the flesh wants to be like him :)

over-rated as to what? technical ability? showmanship? good looks? lets face it VERY few rock guitarists have any serious technical ability. but a guy like angus, he's a great performer, knows how to play loud, and as someone said the crowd loves him. he's a great rock guitarist for those reasons. ditto keith richards and plenty others.

if people like em and they can do the business hell they gotta be OK in my book.

I think to be overrated you first have to be rated. I don’t think lounge shows and home shopping network qualify as a music career to the extent you could be overated.

I think the most overrated guitarist in the world is Jeff Beck

SRV

*room goes silent* I can explain why if anyone would like to know. He was a cool guy, he had some hits, but his guitar playing never blew me away. His influence on others is undeniable, but his original compositions are nothing extraordinary.

Hendrix was a pretty sloppy player, but he painted strange and exciting tonal landscapes for our ears. SRV played blues fast and loud.

Nevin, I only have two questions for you........

1) What type of drugs are you on?

2) Are you willing to share them with the group?

They do what they do well in their bands but I dont think they are that amazing, and yngwie as well ...

I will give you Angus and Yngwie. Yngwie has endless chops, but his lack of songwriting ability makes his albums a very tedious listen.
Angus is a great player, but his music is incredibly simplistic ... and sometimes people overlook this fact too much.
Also, Angus has also had his bouts with some real poor songwriting at times, too.

As for Brian May and Joe Perry, I really disagree here. Brian May blazed his own trail, and created decades worth of masterful guitar
work that is infinitely still listenable to this day. Also, he has proven himself a top-notch songwriter. As for Joe Perry, don't underestimate his lack of flash.
He is also a formidable lead guitarist and ... similar to May ... a tremendous songwriter.

they are good songwriters but they are nothing amazing in respect of guitar playing. Neither of them are like les paul or eddie van halen for example

This is just my personal opinion ... but I really could not disagree more, especially about Brian May. He has a completely unique tone, and plays masterfully
from heavy to very slow. He is a formidable guitar player in multiple different styles. He is as great a rock guitar player as any one in my book.

I hope that was sarcasm.

God no, people always bring up these two and how great they were but I don't get it. I tried to sit through a Chet Atkins special on PBS not too long ago but it was sooooo boring. Nothing inspirational at all. Just a couple of pickers IMHO.

If that was the same special I saw...it was boring, lots of guests like Mark Knopfler and the Everly Brothers, and Emmy Lou.
The feeling I got was....."We're great, look at us and hear the magic".
I didn't stick around long...although I did enjoy the Everly Brothers spin off a couple of songs with their harmony.

heard all of queens stuff and not really sold on him being a technical master to be honest.
I would class really good players as john 5, jim root, eric johnson, albert lee, les paul, joe satriani..........

maybe its time to end this thread. we all have guitarists we admire, and some we don't admire.

i wasn't even going to comment on this subject until i found out that les paul and chet atkins were over-rated. imho, most of us would probably put them among the best ever. i think the problem comes with the style of music. if you don't care for the style of music someone plays, you may not listen to enough of the catalgue to understand what they are doing.

just look to gibson's top guitar players list. i listen mostly to jazz and classic rock, and not very much metal. i don't know about several guitarists on the list, so i'm not going to listen to just 1 song and make a judgement.

just my 2 cents worth.....

John Mayer puts me to sleep -- he always has that "Where'd I leave my Clearasil?" look on his face.

Johnny Lang should holster his dick on stage and learn how to keep his guitar in tune.

GE Smith will never be Steve Cropper -- he should just get over it and move on.

David Gilmore seems to have forgotten the significance of "Three chords and the truth". Too ethereal, too many effects.

The FreeCredit.com "pirate" makes me wanna hurl my Telecaster into my TV whenever the ad runs.

(more to follow as I think of them)

Arjay
