Slash nowadays, yes. But listen to the solo 'The Garden' (not to be confused with 'Garden of Eden') off Use Your Illusion Volume 1 and then come back to me.

For me its Spurt Cocaine without a doubt.

Yeah Slash is over-rated...but he is my all time favorite player.
Jimmi Hendrix is over-rated too (he deserves it), & now it seems like Bob Marley is gettin pretty big. Kids my age are all into Bob...oh & weed! hehe :P

Well I would like to say I agree and disagree with overrated guitarist. I think in
most cases its the record industry that causes this not the artist them selves.
we get bombarded with advertisements for artist and see all the paid articles
that says album of the year or what ever. So it ups the hype ( prime example GNR chinese democracy.) So when its finally released were disappointed. IF
they had just released that album more people may have embraced it but
because of the way it was released their was no way not to be disappointed.

Also the fans cause allot of this. So and so rules everyone else sucks.
mentality. I tend to embrace allot of artist that in the past when I cared what
people thought would have never listened to. Because of it my playing and
song writing has grown 100 fold. Its such a shame this happens..

I also quit listening to the radio that kills artist just as bad I have my ipod set
to rotate my music so everything gets played equally... and that helps allot
also...

Perhaps Slash is noted more for his tone, but I think he is a great player.

Cobain we all know wouldnt be as good compared to say clapton, but remember he spawned Grunge and wrote the #1 best song voted by Rolling Stone Magazine with Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Overated? John Mayer- Im sick of hearing about him. Ill cut a deal with our creator- "..please if you give us back Hendrix, you can have Mayer"

They do what they do well in their bands but I dont think they are that amazing, and yngwie as well ...

I will give you Angus and Yngwie. Yngwie has endless chops, but his lack of songwriting ability makes his albums a very tedious listen.
Angus is a great player, but his music is incredibly simplistic ... and sometimes people overlook this fact too much.
Also, Angus has also had his bouts with some real poor songwriting at times, too.

As for Brian May and Joe Perry, I really disagree here. Brian May blazed his own trail, and created decades worth of masterful guitar
work that is infinitely still listenable to this day. Also, he has proven himself a top-notch songwriter. As for Joe Perry, don't underestimate his lack of flash.
He is also a formidable lead guitarist and ... similar to May ... a tremendous songwriter.

Zakk Wylde. I don't get the hype. Too distorted for my taste.

SRV

*room goes silent* I can explain why if anyone would like to know. He was a cool guy, he had some hits, but his guitar playing never blew me away. His influence on others is undeniable, but his original compositions are nothing extraordinary.

Hendrix was a pretty sloppy player, but he painted strange and exciting tonal landscapes for our ears. SRV played blues fast and loud.
Could not agree more with the SRV statement. I never got into the SRV hype.

Also why do people stretch these post out with bazillion letter long pic links? What a pain in the $@!.

200+ million album sales would say he is not too worried about a few duds.

I would not expect him to, nor would I expect any other similarly "over rated" guitarist with even 1/10th of Angus' record sales ...
Don't get me wrong. I am an Angus fan and am a Bon Scott-era contributor to their 200M number you cite. But he is still overrated ...

If SRV was still alive His playing wouldnt be inflated to the level that it is IMO

The problem I have with defining "Overrated" is this; are we rating on technical skill, soul, overall vibe, influence, popularity or what? Without a defining specification, we could rate any player as overrated, even universally-agreed-upon masters such as Hendrix, Jeff Beck, etc.

I respectfully disagree about SRV; he (and his band) did more to bring blues back into the forefront in the 1980s (and on into the 90s) than anybody else. He also took everything that had happened (as far as wild/funky blues players are concerned) and combined it into one fantabulous package. Twenty years after his death, he is still hugely influential on many players--sometimes a bit too much (e.g., John Mayer, Kenny Wayne Shepard, etc.).
He was not the greatest at anything except being himself...which ain't a bad thing to be!

As far as my personal opinion about someone who is overrated--Yngwie is first on that list. Too mechanical, too sterile and too repetitive. He has two speeds--Fast and Off. Technically, he's very, very proficient, but as a player, meh.

Another personal punching bag of mine is Santana. He does one thing (and does it very well), which is imitate Peter Green, albeit with a Spanish accent. I personally like many of his songs, but after seeing him in concert twice, I have no desire to see him again, nor listen to any new material. Plus, he's as flaky as grandma's pie crust (just try to follow any interview he's ever granted).
