Slash- I agree 100%

King and Hanneman- These guys to me were never great players per se'
But they were part of a whole that was greater than the sum of its parts. The great player out of that group was/is the drummer, Dave Lombardo.
I can't call them overrated because I never thought they, as individual players, were highly rated.

I am going to take a risk here that has some potential for backlash. This is one of my personal favorite guitarist...Jimi Hendrix. I think he was one of the greatest, and maybe the greatest. But some tend to give him an over-godly imsge.

I second the John Mayer motion and also would like to add Jack White. Although both are quite competent guitar players they certainly get more coverage and adulation than they deserve.Kurt Cobain is also too over rated although his style was his own,his playing was nowhere as over the top as a lot of people credit it as being.

slash to be honest i think is a good guitar player and has a lot of soul in his playing, and its recognisable which is why I and millions of other people are fans. He's not John 5 but every guitar player offers something different.

For me the most overrated are tom morello with his effects, technically hes good but the synths are getting old and repetitive.
Brian May, Angus Young, Yngwie, Joe Perry........I do like queen, ac/dc and aerosmith, I just don't think they are that amazing. They do what they do well in their bands but I dont think they are that amazing, and yngwie well....hes ok

Yngwie is very, very good technique-ally speaking. However listening to classical music at 600 BPM gets old after a while. I like "Red Devil" though. 8)

I agree with your commentary. The 3 you mentioned are always the 3 that come to mind first when this question gets asked.

Others: (my opinion)

Robert Johnson, when I listen to him I hear Son House, which is expected because Son House taught him much of his trade

Santana, I love Santana ad much as anyone but aside from listening to something and knowing it is Santana immediately, his playing is limited and he is just good at his "style", Pete Green really made him who he is.

Neil Young, Never understood the fascination with Young as a greta guitarist

The Edge, strip him of his effects and I don't still be the great guitar player he gets notoriety for.

Seriously, it has to be Nevin, I mean everyone knows he's great, but he's overrated...

SRV

*room goes silent* I can explain why if anyone would like to know. He was a cool guy, he had some hits, but his guitar playing never blew me away. His influence on others is undeniable, but his original compositions are nothing extraordinary.

Hendrix was a pretty sloppy player, but he painted strange and exciting tonal landscapes for our ears. SRV played blues fast and loud.

Man now I feel really good about my post! :)

SRV is god, period.
