Any recommendations on a Wes Montgomery CD / album? Been reading up on him and it sounds like he is a Master Jazz Guitarist. I think I should like to give him a listen......

it's kind of tricky to recommend albums. i prefer his music without all the added horns. he took a lot of grief for songs like "windy". the jazz purists were not thrilled by it, but it gave him a wider audience.

my favorite tune by him is "sundown blues", which my guitat teacher taught me years ago.

i'm not as knowledgeable about his catalogue as others are. i'm sure we'll get some help.

A good introduction to Wes might be The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery. I love it and still play it often. It was recorded a few years before Creed Taylor got ahold of him and had him recording pop songs.

That was great !! I've never seen this video before. I thought the heart on his guitar was just a decoration, but now I think he used it to help him keep his hand in the same place. He seemed to have a finger on it almost all of the time and the center of it looks a bit worn.

I'm getting better at octaves, but I'll never play them with the same ease and precision that Wes did. People who have studied his playing style say he struck all three strings and muted the middle one with his fretting hand. When you pluck just the two strings with your index finger and thumb the sound is noticeably different. I could never get my thumb to move that fast.

Thanks very much for the link.

I am not saying you are wrong... But I dont hear that at all... Maybe I am not listening close enough... Could you give me some concrete specific examples from SRV/Hendrix ?

Hendrix I'm not sure, but Stevie...

Here, starting at 4:47

And here at 4:02
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAG-kX_IlUw

But both of them are worth listening to all the way through. :)

And SRV did a cover of Kenny Burrell's Chitlins Con Carne which is really jazzy.

For Jimi, I'm reminded Of Wes by his slower songs, from "Are you experienced?" and "Axis: Bold as Love", how his guitar warmed up with the fatter bottom, a solid body Stratocaster reminding me of the Wes big Gibson L-5CES, use of octaves within those slower songs and phrasing of some of those guitar passages in them along with that warmer tone, I can't explain it, I guess, but listen to that 'Wes vid' Beaubs posted, then, wait a minute or 2, and then listen to "Castles Made of Sand" or "Little Wing" or "Bold as Love"(for how Jimi used those Wes influences in rocking songs as well, made them bigger more emphatic) live through those big Marshall 12s or Sunn 15s it was like Wes on steroids.

Believe it or not my favorite Wes song is Bessa Me Mucho... I learned the whole thing from start to finish... dang, did that take some effort... I used to play it at local jams...

When I get home, I will listen to these clips... I am very curious to hear this...

Go to www.pandora.com - create a (free) station...

and type in Wes Montgomery...you'll get some of his music and some others that do that same style of jazz.

I need to relearn that one...it's been a long time...but it will come back.It will be good practice.
It's bad how you forget songs if you haven't played them for years.
