I have been debating buying an Epiphone LE LP Studio Deluxe and getting rid of my Squier Classic Vibe 60. Don't get me wrong, I love the CV, but looking for a LP style guitar. Unfortunately I have a three guitar limit imposed by my wife. Does anyone have one of these guitars? Any thoughts on it? Is it worth $400 to spend on an Epiphone? I have not played one yet, just looking for opinions at this time. BTW, I am not looking to spend a couple grand for a Gibson so please do not suggest going for a Gibson.

I looked at them. Thanks for the suggestion, BTW I love the Comanche. I already have 3 Stratocasters, now I am looking for a HH guitar for different tones. I like G&L guitars, but I am happy with my current Stratocasters. Looking for more of a Les Paul-type guitar for under a grand.

For super raunchy HB tone this guitar gives the old LP a backhand to the kisser for sure

The LP Studio never did it for me either Gibby or Epi. In the Epi Line, I'd go up the food chain a bit and get the LP Tribute. Gibby pups, USA electronics.

Remember it's not the quantity of guitars you own. I'd rather have one good one than 3 mediocre ones.

Nothing wrong with Epiphone guitars IMO. I own a Wildkat which is a great, unique sounding guitar (small semi-hollowbody w/ P-90's and a Bigsby). I've played a friend's Epi LP and liked it too.

Here's a LP wannabe that I own and consider a great value. Two close musician friends both own Gibson LP's and were very favorably impressed when they played and heard it:

Samick makes more guitars for other companies than they market under their own brand name.

These are all great suggestions. I did think about Gretch as well. I will keep them in mind.

Nevin,

A Gibby for less than 900 dollars. I will have to play one of thise as well. I was looking for HUmbuckers, but P-90's might growel enough.

Sammick and Sammick made guitars are not a bad either, I have owned 2 Sammicks in the past, and they were both really good guitars.

Actually I have 2 great guitars and 1 good guitar, just looking for a change. I agree, quanity is not is not an issue and I am looking for another great guitar to replace my good one with.

I have also been reading on the Forum that varity is the key to a good collection. I was considering a Telecaster HH at first, but still cannot get over the headstock (the only flaw to the guitar is purely in cosmetics). Of course the G&L ASAT looks pretty good.

I will never understand brand allegiance, you don't owe Fender or Gibson or any of them anything. Play what you like, what feels and sounds good.

Epi's are great, the Casino and Dot are as good of guitars as anything Fender, ESP, PRS or anyone else make.

I have 2 humbucker equipped Eppy, an 06 Custom Shop Firebird V and a G-400 Custom(3pup SG bodied Les Paul)and they both are just fabulous guitars, the Firebird sounds just like a mid 60s SG,so much so that it's uncanny. The G-400($550 Cdn)just wails yet can sound really mellow with it's 7 different pickup configurations. If your heart is set on an Epi Les Paul check out the 59 tribute reissues,I played one a few months ago and at around $1000 it was absolutely the best Les Paul I've ever played both in sound and playability and the workmanshp and finish would put any Gibson -outside the very best Custom Shop- to shame.

Before I spent $400 on a Epi LP, I would instead put $225 into an Agile LP copy and pocket the remaining $200 bucks or use it to change out the pups. The Agile guitars, in my opinion, are made better, the tops look better, they come with grover tuners and the stock pups really arent that far off from the Epi pups. Upgrade it to some better pups and you have a guitar that slays an Epi for LESS than $400.

This is the color I had, but they make virtually any color that Epi does

Owning a Gibson Custom Shop guitar myself, I can make the following statement:

You get what you pay for. While the guitar was still overpriced, it is an absolute keeper. I would rather get a good guitar the first time VS 5 mediocre ones.

My 1958 Les Paul blows me away just looking at it. The quality is definitely there. Most Gibson guitars are now weight relieved, chambered and just plain butchered. It is pretty hard to get a good replica of a vintage Les Paul. The Epiphone 59 is not even close at all.

The Custom Shop historics get the best wood and it shows in the fabulous grain and weight these guitars are getting. I have not had to tune my Les Paul since I bought it! The neck is absolutely monstrous and I love it.

Self confessed GEAR SNOB....Yep!

I own two Gibson Historic re-issue Les Pauls: a AAAAA flametop R9 and a Vibrola-equipped '62 with Tom Murphy aged parts. The difference in quality between these instruments and Gibson's standard GC fodder is as dramatic as that between a mid-70s Ford Pinto and a brand-new Lincoln MKZ.

You get what you pay for.

Does that make me a gear snob?

You better fookin' believe it!

Problem is, the 70's Pinto was dirt cheap and Gibson's "standard GC fodder" isn't. With Gibson, you don't always get what you pay for, but often less. :(
