Man,nobody has mentioned how Eric was drowning in his love for Patti Harrison and struggling to come up with something in the Layla sessions and going much of nowhere, until my favorite player,Skydog, came in and lit a fire under his rear and the rest of the band and now it's one of his signature tunes.
Read what everyone has to say about the making of Layla...Duane Allman was the catalyst that fired it up and brought Eric out of his withdrawn mood to finish it with a bang....then it was back into heroin for a year or two for Eric.
Tommy Dowd knew what he was doing to make a great album.
Heck,Duane came up with the opening riff for Lalya.
Don't get me wrong,I really like Eric, but I think if the Lalya album had gone nowhere, and we were stuck with the lackluster stuff he put out in the 70s/80s,we wouldn't even be discussing much of this.

Waycool...you want to hear a true master?
Give "The Allman Brothers Band at Fillmore East" a good listen....you can't miss Duane's playing.

EC just being alive and well and able to play is a blessing to us all. He hit a hard bottom that's for sure. Hendrix just thought he was invincible.

Look at all the great songs he's done!

One thing I don't believe anyone mentioned is his ability to sing. He's my very favorite and was the first to have a signature Strat.

Don't lose track of the fact that this is a Fender Forum . Those artists are known for using Gibson guitars. But they're in my collection.

doc again you are correct. my question was directed towards those general questions we sometimes ask like
"who has the best tone", which is one that comes to mind right away.

Well those two are about as close together as alpha and omega with respect to style. You'd have to take each one of them at their own merits.
There's a distinct Freddy King influence in terms of tone, on Clapton's first solo CD, which is not reflected on anything he did with either Cream or Blind Faith and there are many who prefer the slightly overdriven coarse sound of that old guitar to that which evolved from 1986. As for George T.....well....you'll need to drag out a whole legion of slide players starting with Elmore James to buttonhole him.

Yeah right Eric Clapton is really a good singer and composer. One of my favorite song of him is the song "wonderful tonight" I can say that its one of the most romantic song ever. And this has been popular and usually sang by some singers.
