In particular, what I love is of course the RIDICULOUS solo after the second verse, then, just as amazing, how tight the band is, and how smoothly they jump back into the groove like it was no big deal. Amazing to my ears. Should be the same version on your records.

ive always liked that song. its the one song i think everybody can tie to eric. i cant damn wait to get to the second cd of my set.
got "other thing" to do yet today so............
i just want to give it a fair honest listen ya know?

lol if the man is as great as folks say, and hes been doing this for decades, then im way behind on my education.
several of the posts above have given me a boost to look a little deeper into eric, more so than i would have w/o them. up until 2 days ago i didnt much care for him. its posts like the above that are making me want to see and learn more on a subject i otherwise wouldnt have given a second thought. so, its my opinion that im getting exactly what im seeking in this post. thanks folks keep it coming.

What happened??

You're using an outake from "The Last Waltz" during which his guitar strap came off to prove your point? Who can tell where they were physically and emotionally by that moment in the perfomance. Every player has their lacklustre moments. Suppose you review his playing in "Queen of Spades" during the '07 Crossroads.

Sorry guys, you misunderstood me, I posted that vid to show how GREAT he was back then, it's one my favorite, his tone, his playing, even his singing, all sound great! I said it was later, like in the 90s that things got really bad... I forgot all about the strap til I watched the vid when I posted it, been a while since I've see it. I think I watched the Last Waltz EVERY day back in the 80s while learning to play.

That's why I said was it the alcohol :) didn't he sober up in the 90s? and that's why he go so boring...

i dont know bro, i liked the video you posted.
i thought his playing was actually pretty good there and his tone wasnt
so bad.
ok guys i know what we can do here, post me up some of your fav videos of eric. i know you got them.
sucks, i just found a link that was titled
freddie king/eric clapton "hideaway", and its some other band doing a cover. sh@t. im really digging freddie right now. that would have been a sweet video as hideaway is probably my fav blues tune.

Freddie King 1934-1976 CD features Clapton on a few songs, As a Freddie fan you NEED this CD. His guitar tone and vocals are amazing! Clapton does a good job as well.

This is the last song on the CD, it's a Live recording

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcTOoOlr288

Besides Cream one of my favorite Clapton album is "Just One Night", not sure if the CD yo have includes songs from that album, highly recommended!

http://www.amazon.com/Just-One-Night-Eric-Clapton/dp/B000002G8L

Here's some great playing from that album.. listen to the second half of the song.

So when you listen to him on some of these earlier albums then listen or watch him today, it's not the same guy!

I guess I didn't clarify my statement about Clapton kicking off the electric blues genre.I realize fully that giants like Albert King,Muddy Waters,B.B. King etc. were on the go then but it was Eric that was largely bringing electric blues to white audiences and fusing classic blues riffs with rock. Clapton opened peoples eyes to the contribution of Muddy,Albert et al. The electric blues genre was what Brian Jones had in mind when he formed The Stones until Mick and Keith wrenched control from him.

I have always respected Clapton off the strength of covering Outside Woman Blues alone. Great player, not everyones clear favorite but definitely not overrated.

The Freddie King influence is heard most clearly on EC's first solo effort, "Eric Clapton". The tone on "After Midnight" speaks to it. However, IMHO, the beer commercial's verson blows it out of the water and the only place I have it is on a disc in the Crossroads I Box Set.

In keeping with that thought, and for way cool's consideration, have a listen to the track "Rambl'in On My Mind" on the CD 'EC Was Here'.
Hang in there for the guitar solo. One of my favorites. 8)

By the math, neither am I, but I understand that the Viagra people are working on a formulation to enhance guitar virtuosity in advanced age where speeding up is a plus. 8)

Yeah that album is from the 70s, I believe I had a cassette of that album :) I don't think he was playing a Strat either, but nice tone back then!
