ok for yrs now ive said hes one of the most overated guitar players ever.
didnt say he was bad, just didnt care for him. engwie by far and way holds the trophy but thats another post altogether.
so i found myself buying the complete clapton on disk today.
why you ask? well i want to give him another chance,
so i figured that this disk would allow me to cover him from begining to end, or close to it. am i wrong in my thinking?
ok he did a couple ok songs in my opinion but im gonna give him another listen just to see if my opinion changes any. its been a very long time ago that i made this opinion and havent bothered to give him a good listen since. any comments you guys/gals want to leave are welcome.

Something you are either forgetting or never knew. NOBODY was doing what Clapton was in the 60's. NOBODY.

Same with Van Halen, Hendrix, and "engwie" as you call him. These guys all broke new ground on the guitar, and will always be looked upon with reverence in the guitar community, no matter how stale their playing has become.

Buy the Crossroads I Boxed Set; The DVD's of the '04 and '07 Crossroads
Concerts; The Clapton/Winwood DVD; The Layla 20th Anniversary Boxed Set; The George Harrison in Japan Tour CD set; some of the old Prince's Trust Videos on YouTube among others there of his work. The man's demonstrated a varied discography, workproduct, and choice of musical feels over the past nearly 50 years.

Furthermore, these posts never end well, as everyone has thier own opinion of who is good and who isnt.

Far too subjective of a topic.

Having said this, you would think such a big fan of "engwie" might know how to spell his name.

(Yngwie Malmsteen is somewhat of the proverbial "One trick pony" isnt he?)

oh $@!& this! Clapton is one of the if not the most influential guitarists of all time! Back in the 60's he took the electric guitar to completely new levels and brought it to what it is today and to say that he's over rated is the most insane thing i have ever read

Given the span of his career, even he had his peaks and troughs.
He was not immune to hurling sonic pablum at us during the 70's and 80's.
("There's One in Every Crowd" and "No Reason to Cry" are two that
come to mind.)
Whether he's overrated is subjective.
There's no denying him though, he knows his way around a fretboard.
True, his playing seems sterile/clean and lacks more emotion, certainly not
as gutteral as SRV, Robert Cray,Texasguitarslinger and the like............ 8)

Clapton was the one who kicked off the whole electric blues genre,it was Clapton who took the music of Robert Johnson,Leadbelly etc.,electrified it and brought it to the mainstream. The original Crossroads 4CD set released circa 1990 chronicles his days in the Yardbirds to his solo career,it demonstrates how the master evolved his precise soulful playing style.

ok folks please keep in mind i dont intend to bash eric at all. so theres no need to defend him as if i did. i just want to know more about him is all.
he plays some interesting stuff. to charge him with being the man that brought us electric blues guitar is another story. i would have to have/see proof of that. do keep in mind the intention of this post is for my education on eric, so if i say anything that offend's another, im sorry and its not my intentions.

im 1/2 way through disk 1 for those that own a copy of said disks.

Clapton is one of the best. At times though, I like the blues style of Jimmy Page better than Clapton. George Harrison was no hack either. The 4 CD Crossroads set is a masterpiece.

ok ive at this point made it through the first disk. honestly, ive not been wowed as of yet. ok he writes some good songs at points but i guess im looking for that wow factor. havent heard it yet.
i can say that i am liking him abit more. he was referred to earlier as
"the master". im not so sure i would go that far yet.
i will say this though, theres guitar players out thee that suck live and do great on album. theres players out there that sound great live but crappy on disk, then theres good live or disk.
its just the way it works honestly. i saw a video of clapton and mayer jammin. they both did a great job.

When I saw Eric with Cream on their farewell tour in '68 I thought his guitar playing was 2nd only to Jimi. Just like the late great Jimi, you can tell its him playing by his unique style. Enjoy the CDs Bro. 8)

Clapton had some influence on me as well as Rory Gallagher, Roy Buchanan, Lonnie Mack, Albert King, Link Wray and countless others. We're all thieves to some degree. Only cavemen were original.

Just depends on when you grew up. Clapton was very original way back as was Beck.
