Hey phreddybee; He very well may have. I just heard about Young. There may be a list of people that tried out for those parts. Like Hendrix being the opening band for the Monkees early on. Mickey Dolenz was a child TV star from the TV show, Circus Boy.
Yeah I always heard Stills tried for the show, and I also remember the Circus Boy show from the 50s I guess it was.

Forgot about Circus Boy.

I saw a tv movie about the Monkees a long time ago and it was funny how they were trying to prove they were the American answer to the Beatles. They were in the studio playing the instruments and thought they had it down and then somebody bought the Sgt.Pepper album....I remember the scene where they were listening to that and someone asked...."how can we compete with THAT?"

Apparently after the first Monkee album they played their own instruments- no doubt aided by studio musicians-as Nesmith and Tork were already fairly accomplished musicians and Dolenz was given intensive drum tuition between seasons and albums.

I'm not sure about the accomplished part. In the film "The Wrecking Crew" Mickey Dolenz said they didn't really play their own instruments in the beginning and they got a bunch of garbage about it, but the Beach Boys and the Byrds got a free pass so to speak. The Monkees did play their own stuff later but were aided as guitslinger said by studio musicians.

They were actors so they could have been lip syncing at their concerts who knows. The playing on the early Monkees albums was first rate. Studio musicians rarely if ever got credit on the album jacket for their work. The Wrecking Crew were monster players.

Hi 63 Supro,I realize that Tork and Nesmith weren't virtuosos by any stretch of the imaginationthat's why prefaced accomplished with "fairly" which was also probably a stretch too lol.To his credit Nesmith has released some pretty decent material in the folk/rock/country vein in the past years.

I have an old video of Nesmith's called "Elephant Parts" The tunes were nothing spectacular but the bits were kind of entertaining. I don't think I've ever seen a reunion tour. That would be interesting. You see Davey Jones, Tork and Dolenz once in a while, but I haven't seen Nesmith.

And for the younger forum members who aren't familiar with The Wrecking Crew, check out this Web site.

http://www.wreckingcrewfilm.com/

Fascinating stuff from a group of amazing musicians who never got the credit they deserved.
