Does anybody know who played the excellent guitar parts on Valleri by The Monkees?Mike Nesmith although a great musician didn't play it although he mimed it on the show.Since most of the Monkees instruments were played by the Wrecking Crew when Nesmith,Tork and Dolenz weren't playing it was most likely one of them.I read somewhere who the guitarist was who played it but it wasn't Tommy Tedesco or Glen Campbell. So who was that brilliant Spanish style player?

Thanks SBLS I do believe that it was Louis Shelton,I've always wondered what kind of guitar he used to get that tone,I imagine it was a Barney Kessel or a Byrdland or some other jazz box.

Not to change you subject, but Neil Young, of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, was turned down for the part in the Monkees because of bad facial complexion.

I believe it was Louie Shelton. He did most of the studio work for their early albums. Louie played a Tele most of the time.

Hey phreddybee; He very well may have. I just heard about Young. There may be a list of people that tried out for those parts. Like Hendrix being the opening band for the Monkees early on. Mickey Dolenz was a child TV star from the TV show, Circus Boy.

Mickey Dolenz was the son of actor George Dolenz who played The Count of Monte Christo in movie shorts and TV in the 50s so acting was in his blood.

While we're on the subject of the Monkees...

Peter Tork apparently is an awesome banjo player. I believe he was the only one of the Monkees who could actually play an instrument with any real skill at the beginng. Not much of a singer though

Wasn't aware of that one, thanks for the info. One of my daughter's teachers went to see the Monkees when she was a kid. Saw Hendrix as the opening show.

Peter used to play banjo at all the Monkees concerts also Mike Nesmith was an established songwriter when the Monkees appeared on TV. Mike penned the hit Different Drum for the Stone Ponies that brought a young and beautiful Linda Ronstadt to fame while in the Monkees.

I believe it was Louis Shelton too. If you can get a copy of "The Wrecking Crew" get it. It's some seriously amazing stuff. A bunch of The Beach Boys music for "Pet Sounds" was done by the Wrecking Crew as well as some of the Byrds stuff. I don't believe Nesmith really played guitar very well in the beginning. Davy Jones was the only one who was a "professional" singer and actor from when he was a young boy. In the Beginning none of the Monkees played their own instruments according to some accounts.
