I think he's great! I've yet to see him live. So much soul and energy! He opened for Clapton couple years ago when he came to town, but of course I didnt bother going :)

Get funky!

I saw him a couple of years ago when he was opening for Switchfoot and Third Day. I had never heard of him at the time. When I saw the roadies bring the steel guitar out onto the stage I thought it was going to be terrible. I'm not a country music person and I thought that was what was going to happen. I was totally wrong. Not only was it not country, it was great! :D I had just started listening to SRV at the time and I recognized the influence even then. And I've been a huge Robert Randolph fan ever since. I haven't seen him live since then, but I really want to again next time he's in the area.

Seeing his performances on TV kinda reminded me of SRV, cuz he puts some much into it, and it looks like he loves what he's doing. Glad you got to see him!

I saw him open for Clapton in Belfast a few yyears back and we were given a demo of his album.

He is absolutely astounding in my eyes (ears).

He and his mates are a spectacular team. Great talent and rich coming uppance. A couple of issues:
-He plays pedal steel....and not even Fender. Not much in the way of wiggle room in these Forum pages on that account.
-needs a wider audience appeal and choice of material. Latest CD is again faith-based in its concept. He's got a seriously down and dirty groove which needs material to be carried by it to the masses. 8)

Saw him a few years ago along with Mayer, and Clapton at Hard Rock.
Completely outstanding, and got really into it, so much he fell of his chair...

Robert Randolph's not unknown by any stretch of the imagination. I saw him open for Clapton a few years ago and Clapton brought him out for a couple of songs.
He's an incredible pedal steel player. I really like pedal and lap steel players. Junior Brown is another one of my favorites. Just depends on what type of music you listen to. I listen to and enjoy just about every type of music, except rap. Just don't get it.

That man makes the pedal steel rock! The whole blues/rock/soul/jazz combination is really cool.

Not by you or I but to most music fans he is still virtually unknown and that includes people who don't listen to pop music. Just my opinion of course but I have introduced his music to many people I know that listen to good music new and old, but had never been introduced to his work. His career has definitely picked up steam in the past 2 years though with playing at Crossroads and with other bigger name musicians, but his early releases are gems too.
