Lots of great tonemeisters mentioned here, but why no mention of Carlos? Especially Europa :!:

It's not easy to limit the list and that was a good point from Nevin about live tone vs studio tone.

I prefer the live recordings I have of Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, SRV, Brian May, Angus Young and Malcolm Young.

I agree! Specially the tone he had in the 70s when he played the Yamaha, way better tone than today with the PRS IMO! I love that tone so much I ended up buying a 79 SG2000 :D

For me it will always be between Izzy Stradlin and Dave Gilmour.

This is such a tricky question so unfair. their are so many great artist that have fantastic tones. Then their are some less desirable player with amazing tones also. But If I had the option of learning or knowing how these players create their tones I would want to have Billy Gibbons Brain. The tones that guy creates wow. Those tasty overtones are making my mouth water right now.. I love the XXX album...

Brian May sounds very good.
The Youngbloods' "Get Together" has a great guitar tone.
Eddie Van Halen has always sounded great especially on the last tour with his new rig.
Steve Jones sounds awesome on Never Mind the Bulllocks... Slash...Stevie Ray Vaughan with those huge strings.
Buddy Holly's Stratocaster sounded so "pure". He sure picked the right rig for his act!
I love the sound on Yes' "Owner of a Lonely Heart". Huge.
Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky". Great Tele-fuzz tone. This might be my favorite.
As for the best bass tone...

Jaco's bass tone will give a guy "hope" when he's sometimes down. Jaco would still be playin' that old Jazz today I bet. Fretted stuff was great too.
Paul McCartney has a great tone. Listen to his isolated bass tracks on You Tube. Best of the bunch.
Marcus Miller has to have the best slap tone.
John Paul Jones on Led Zeppelin II. Thick and sonic.
As for the "trebley" bass guys...Geddy Lee early on. He's brave to be playing on a Rickenbacker with that much treble. Nowhere to hide.
Gulp...I think Jason Newstead sounds great with that old black Spector bass during the Black Album sessions.

I'm mainly a Blues guy, so the usual AK, Freddie, BB, Collins, SRV, Cray are the kinda simple tones I like... but I actually find Andy Timmons's tone very sweet. He even convinced me to get a BB Preamp :)

I'm surprised that nobody from across the pond has mentioned Kim Simmonds of Savoy Brown-what that guy could get from a 335 is pure tone Heaven.

I like Gene Simmons but he plays Bass for Kiss, Ace Frehley plays lead guitar and Paul Stanley rhythm.
