Need to restring the old Epi. Forty-five years old and going strong. I keep her out and handy so she gets a lot of acoustic playing time. It has a single pickup, but also "f" holes so she can be played like and acoustic. Last year I had a luthier bring her back to life. He strung it. Time for some new strings. Do I get acoustic or electric. I believe she has a set of Ernie Balls on it now.

If the guitar had a piezo pickup it wouldn't matter too much,I don't think so anyway but single coils,P 90s or humbuckers definitely perform better with steel electric strings.Bronze,Phosphur-bronze etc. for acoustic guitars don't have near the magnet response as ferrous metals and are therefore not suitable.

I believe DR (I think that's who does it....) makes a bronze/nickel wrapped string specifically for acoustic/electrics. Maybe others do as well (? Fender?)........
I don't own an ac/elec so, I have no experience with them.....
YMMV

I play a Fender Telecoustic Deluxe which has a Tele pup AND a Fishman and both can be blended with a slider so I have had this predicament recently too. I finally settled on D'Adarrio 10 Bronze acoustic strings but I don't use the wound G. I use an Ernie Ball 17 for the 3rd string.

Saying that I usually am playing it through an acoustic amp and very rarely use the Tele pup on its own.

Best of luck.

Are the bridge saddles adjustable for intonation? If not, that will tell you whether is was designed for a wound G or not. A wound G would have the saddle up forward similar to the high E. A non-wound would be back further than the B.
