I think I speak for everyone when I say nobody really cares about differentiating between viruses and other forms of malware. It's a case of splitting hairs.

Nobody at the Apple depot was ever able to determine just what exact kind of malware it was that crippled my mother's Mac beyond any cost effective repair but it did happen last year and she was forced to buy a new one. I educated her about the dangers of just roaming around all willy nilly clicking on anything and everything and she has suffered no issues since then. That's all anybody really cares about.

As time goes on and Macs become more commonplace we will see more Macs being targeted. Which methods are used in those attacks is generally irrelevant to John Q Public.
I am surprised they just didn't erase her hard drive and reinstall. If you go to the Apple store here they do that stuff at no charge but its best to make appointment at the Genius Bar for it. Better yet run Time machine on a second drive that takes care of anything where you can do it you self at any time.

How cute, he's selling anti virus software, that needs to be bought every year, when you can download a free version of the AVG anti virus suite. i have used that for about ten years, and guess what?! never had one virus, spyware, or any other issue. All you are required to do, is regular manual updates, that take only about 30 seconds at most. I just got into the habit of doing it 1st thing when i fire up my pc. Oh, and those extended service plans...HAH! i have never once bought one, and never regretted it for one second!

It was an older generation Mac and whatever the malware was caused physical damage to the drive. I can't remember what she said they called it but I recall thinking it must be similar to corrupted boot sector in the PC world. They did confirm it must have been caused by malware but I can't remember what that was called either. The price they quoted to replace the drive and reinstall software was high enough she decided to buy a slightly newer used Mac for about $150 more.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
