Any way so I'm a bass player and have been from the very start 3 years ago, but recently have been picking up the guitar alot. Mostly my friends guitars but I have a crappy strat copy (that is beyond use for many a reason).

My local store just got in the squier telecaster custom, double bound body and three colour sunburst, it looks and plays amazing. I've read nothing but good reviews so I think it's a good buy, but... I feel like a traitor to bass players! Kind of. Almost like I should be only buying bass related equipment.

So it's ok for bass players to dable in the guitar realm right? Suppose this is sort of a dumb post ... So to add some depth I'll ask some questions about the tele custom! Any one use it? Opinions? Looks like a good bang for the buck, am I correct?

Personally, 'play guitar most of the time but 202 Masses to date as church bass player. Also bouzouki and mandolin picker.

It's all one big string players' happy family.

Think of liking different isntruments as liking different varieties of food. Sometimes y' want pasta, sometimes a burger, sometimes Kung Pao Shrimp, sometime sausage gravy and biscuits.

Will,
absolutely nothing wrong with getting a guitar. IMO a musician needs to be well rounded. This is just another step in your musical education. Go for it. This will help you relate to your guitarist bandmates better in the future! I am a guitarist who has done a lot of bass session work to help when needed.

I was a guitar player until my Tele was stolen in Oct. of '68, never forgave myself for letting her get nicked so I began playing bass guitar. I use a six string guitar to write songs with as a bass player may hear rhythm parts when writing too. If you so desire, get the Tele, 1 good song and it is paid for.

Will,
I went the other way back around the first of the year. Played guitar off and on for over forty-five years but always had an interest in bass. My wife (God bless her) gave me a Squier Affinity J bass and Rumble 15 for Christmas and I've been havin' a ball with it. Don't feel a bit like a traitor :)

Hey Albert King was a drummer ;)

I'm a guitar player but I have played bass many times at gigs, like when the bass player needed a break, or when the bass player also happened to be a guitar player.. I almost bought me a bass, but I think I ended up spending money on yet another guitar.

Go get that Tele and be happy :)

No reason for a bass player not to pick up a guitar especially one as nice as the one you have your eye on.Paul McCartney plays guitar often at concerts and played the lead on a lot of Beatle recordings such as Ticket to Ride and even on George's Taxman.Noel Redding was originally a lead guitarist before taking up bass for The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

I believe Berry Oakley played guitar before he played bass and it shows in his style with the Allman Brothers...Duane said one time,"We have 2 little guitars and 1 big guitar in our band."
Cedarblues...you got me on Albert King being a drummer...I didn't know that...I like picking at drummers.
I ain't coordinated enough to be one.

Hi,

It's true that Bass players are less in number now a days.. My inner feeling is that you need to listen to your heart and do that only which matters you the most...

So go get the good guitar and play to your heart's content..

LOL I can never play drums, I find it way too complicated

Lucky Peterson, one of the best Blues guitarist alive today IMO, and a great keyboard player, is also a serious drummer! Some people are just talented I guess.. I've seen Lucky jump from one instrument to another in one song!

Hey! So I guess I never followed up on this but....... The tele is mine!! And I love every thing about it! (I don't have any pics but it looks like every squier classic vibe custom but with a special wood grain!)

I got it for 440$ here in Canada, not sure if that's good or not? But either way the guitar is great.

Also I've kept up a good day schedule of learning songs on the guitar and playing the bass. All is well that way, I still love to play both. Also my fingers are taking it very well!

So thanks for the advice

Will P
