ive heard of guys playing their strats through these amps.
is there truth to this? if so why through a bass amp?
looking to hear from those that have done this before and can explain the pros and cons to this. i have opportunity to get my hands on a bassman
head.

Not just any Bassman head.

Look for the 6G6-A or 6G6-B version.

These amps (unlike the later AA864 and AB165 blackfaces) have four cascaded gain stages in the "BASS INSTRUMENT" channel. Thus, they sound like no other Bassman ever made.

Bassman circuit uses a cathode follower, which provides a slight compression of the sound. This also allows an increase in current, and more signal is sent to the power amp. This amp had outstanding dynamics and killer low end which transformed a quaky Strat into a tone monster. Because they were designed for base there a straight clean amp with no vibrato, tremlo, or reverb.. they will hold clean head room farther than most amps of that era but do distort in the power stage a round 6 or 7 for a nice crunch.. they do have a distinctive sound but are an acquired taste but loved by many.. all around a great amp….I personally am more of a deluxe reverb fan. ….. For the record, in my opinion the originals
( not the re issues) were under designed as a base amp with 2-ohm output impedance transformers (very odd) open back cabs… they just weren’t great bass rigs and probably why guitarists started using them cuz bass guys did not want them.

Hope I answered some of your questions

Cheers
Bill

if you're gonna use an overdrive pedal to a bassman, well it should be ok, but then it's gonna alter the sound...

You are gonna lose a bit of tone but not too much as the OCD is an overdrive and not a distortion pedal; and the Bassman is a clean amp.. In my opinion this is a good combination… I would use my amp over drive as much as I could and keep my drive knob on the OCD to moderate levels and you will be golden. Again this should be a rocking set up. I would love to hear a vid of how this sounds when you get it up and running…… have fun and best of luck Way Cool JR..

Cheers

thank you bill, your a great help.
its still up in the air if i actually get this amp yet.
theres a couple guitars im lookinbg at as well.
1, i can either finish a build on a body that i bought 18yrs ago
with full intention of building a guitar with and never did,
2, i can buy the bassman
3, im going to look at a SRV strat today as well as a
mint SG diablo in cherry red.
4, i really want to get some better yet midgrade recording
equipment here to play with. some kind of porta studio with power monitors to goof off and see what i can do.

i dont know that theres any shortage on bassman's out there.
i dont know much about them honestly.
are there reissues out there? are they any better/worse than an original?

Sorry. Great blues rig though. Good clean headroom till you hit about 5-6 on the dial, and then grit city................... 8) Mike

thats why i would use the OCD, to achieve "the tone" at much lower volumes. say, what size speakers is in your bassman's cab?

That's when I use it too. I have a pair of 12" Weber 12F150's in it. I saved the stock Oxfords to re-cone someday. The Webers sound fantastic...... 8) Mike
