Fender is my favorite solid body electric guitar, there is an appreciation of other makes but what I have found is with a Fender you can play songs that have been recorded with other guitar makes but by making some adjustments to your Fender you closely imitate those other sounds and the song being played can sound better with the Fender. Unfortunately the same cannot be said of other makes of guitars. If it was recorded with a Fender the song won't sound the same and definitely not better if you use another non-Fender guitar. So, no it is quite naturally to like the best.

I like variety, so I couldn't just play fenders, but if it suits your guitar needs/wants to play only Fenders, then go for it.

Hello, my name is Richard and I have a FMIC Stratocaster addiction. I have given up on all other guitar brands and I only own Stratocasters from FMIC. I have been looking at Teles, but I fear that will open up another avenue of my addiction.

Those of us who know Richard well, knowing that he....having been in the life for many years.....and a seasoned professional in his own right....recognize that he has come to be open and honest, not only about his admitted addiction, but in the manner of his guitar gender orientation in general. His has, so to speak, 'come out of the case. As he has done, do feel free to use this Forum as a sounding board with respect to your own situation. I tend to gravitate toward Fender and G&L guitars; however, I will play anything that lands in my hands at any given time.

Non-Fender guitars that I have played and/or owned (at one time or another):

Danelectro DC3 Pro
Epiphone Junior
Ibanez (acoustic) (great guitar!)
Ampeg Big Stud bass
and many, many more...

For some reason, though, I always end up back with my Fenders and G&Ls; probably because of the scale (don't like that fraction of an inch less that Les Pauls have, throws off the intonation when I bend the strings).

Wow, great replies from everyone. It is amazing for me to see how the only other guitar I am comfortable with is a Gretsch. I used to have a Gibson LP and just could never bond with it...great looking and sounding guitar but playing it was kind of like kissing your sister  not for me..LOL I used to have a few ESPs..again nice guitars but just never felt right. I think too that my sound I have always looked for I get with Fender so maybe I am just not willing to mess up what I have..:)

I think it is ridiculous to think the only good guitar is a Fender and thats the only one worth owning. Very limited thinking.

If I could only have 2 guitars it would be my 335 and Strat. If I could only have 1 it would be my 335 :)

It's nice to have varieties, both guitars and amps, if possible... I own a couple of Strats and a couple of Gibson, also have a Yamaha SG2000, one of the nicest sounding guitars I ever played, if you're into a nice warm tone.

I will bet you a McDonalds happy meal there is a big building in Arizona and Corona California that will say you do not have a problem what so ever.

Play whatever you like and feels good to you.

My prior observations aside, he also admittedly has the very good fortune to be married to an understanding and supportive woman. 8)

Sorry but thats what it sounded like. To say that Fender is the only thing that feels right in your hands you no. Thats what you said. There are many makers that make and have made strat similar guitars that you could never tell the difference in feel from a Fender strat. I have a friend that has Tokia's that I know you would not tell one from the over. Then I ask which Fender's are the only ones that feel right to you C, D, V, Soft V, 7 1/4, 9 1/2, 12 radius. It seems more of a name thing to some then anything else.

Ok, first off, I have been playing for the better part of 35 years. In that time as I stated earlier I have had everything form Gibsons to ESP to Fender. The only other guitar besides Fenders that feel right in my hands are Gretsch's. I love the feel of C necks and the 9.5 neck raidus. To try and tell me what feels right in MY hands..well..IMO that is ridiculous. As for the name thing...nope...not here. I am not in the group of name snobs. If this comes off as an attack at you it is not intended to it is just illiustrating what feels right in my hands and to my ears :)

I wouldn't say it is strange at all, obviously most of here are Fender fanatics. If you were to play a guitar of a different brand and really like it but not buy it only based off it not being a Fender then that might be a bit strange.

I personally like Guild guitars better than any other brand, for me they are just the perfect build, but I also love the Telecaster so I would never pass up a Tele because it wasn't made by Guild.

What is important to me in a guitar? (in order of importance):

(1) Feel.
If the neck doesn't feel right, if the body isn't comfortable, I won't play it much or I won't play it at all, not matter what name is on it, no matter how valuable, no matter what it looks like. I'm not talking about action--that can be adjusted--I'm talking about how the guitar "feels" when I play it...and the neck/body type/weight doesn't have to be the same--all three of my electrics have substantially different neck shapes, body types, body wood and weight, but they each feel right to me.

(2) Sound/Tone.
If it feels right, but sounds like poo, it won't be played very much. The reason I say "sound/tone" instead of just "tone" is my belief that tone comes from the player as much as the instrument. (I can hand my guitar, hooked up to my rig, to another player and he can have a totally different tone; likewise, I can play someone else's rig and sound nothing like them).

(3) Reliability.
Does it stay in tune? Are the electronics (pickups, pots, 1/4" cable jack) good? Is it durable?

(4) Looks.
I will admit it; I won't play a guitar I find unattractive, even if the previous three criteria are met...notice I didn't the guitar had to be pretty--my Ampeg Big Stud bass surely doesn't qualify as a "pretty" guitar, but I love it nonetheless. My Telecaster and G&L F-100 are only above-average in the looks department, but I find them attractive, so I love them. You will never see one of those pointy-headed heavy-metal butt-ugly guitars (BC Rich, anyone?) in my hand, except to put it on the fire during winter-time (LOL).

Note that who/where it was manufactured does not come into the decision, nor does the cost or reputation of the maker...basically, if I like a guitar, I will play it.
