So far I think it's been the realization that I don't always have to play fast all the time and that not playing anything can have as much affect on the song as playing something. You can have great chops, but if you don't have good phrasing then it almost doesn't matter that you can a cool lick. I'm still trying to work on that, it's very hard to play lead guitar without relying on licks alone.

It works for Jeff Beck pretty well, eh? 8)

For me, movable shapes and scales. That way all you need to jam is a guitar and another person!

The things that have helped me the most so far are the basics: Rhythm, chords, and scales. I never play without them.

I'm just beginning, but for me, patience and being able to walk away for a little bit.

I got real frustrated with an easy song. I got down and thought that anyone could play this stupid song but me (It was picking "Love Me Tender" by Elvis). I put the song away for a day. When I came back to it the following day, I picked it almost perfectly the first time around. I think that sometimes I just need to take a break from something for awhile.

I just go at my own pace, play what I like. Mostly, I don't take myself to seriously on most days.

The fact I learned that you never stop learning. Ever. Makes you hungry to know as much as you can.

Got sober five years ago. Playing wise, years of practice................ 8) Mike

I've been clean and sober for 10 years now, so I do know where you're coming from. My playing has improved immensely since I quit drinking , drugging, and smoking. Having a clear head does wonders for you.

+1

Sober for twelve years now (never did the drug thing, but I kept Miller Brewing Company in business)...the first time I played sober in front of an audience, I thought I was gonna die, but seeing my wife's smile during the performance helped me make it through.

Interestingly enough, I had to re-learn to do certain things and how to play certain songs...Lord only knows what I was playing before, because I couldn't remember what I was doing!

Don't bust a gut trying to emulate someone else but take what you like from several influences and develop your own style and march to your own drummer. This is probably THE MOST IMPORTANT thing for a guitarist- take care of your hands by doing stretches and relaxation excercises before and after playing. After 45 yrs of playing up to 10 hrs. a day all that playing caught up with me and has almost cost me the ability to play. I am now undergoing intensive chiropractic and accupuncture treatments to undo the damage I have done to my hands and will consequently have to relearn how to play.BTW if you are doing any mechanical work, gardening etc. ALWAYS wear protective gloves no matter how small or seemingly insignificant the job.

You're so right!
Now that I have lots of pain associated with arthritis, the days of picking up the axe and just playing hard are over with...oh,yeah,I can still do it,but it cuts down on playing time because without warming up before,my hands start hurting sooner.
So now I try to warm up by stretching and running some scales slower before I really play hard.

Love has absolutely nothing to do with sex, only exception is if a man and woman get married and mutually agreed upon sex is a way that they share their love.

Playing your guitar is absolutely the only way to get better, you can't look at your guitar and get better, you can't sleep with your favorite music on and get better, even if your super hot girlfriend gives you and your guitar a massage (although it would feel good) it won't make your guitar playing better, the only way to get better at playing guitar is to play your guitar.
