Well some guitars wouldn't be legendary if they weren't smashed... like the Monterey Pop one.

HOWEVER, I totally agree with you 100%. I came from a high school where the music program was short on instruments and a lot of students that wanted to play couldn't! If artists donated their old instruments, or sold it for charity to someone who will play it and love it, we'd make more productive use of our instruments.

You make a great point! In this economy many school music programs must be taking huge hits.

I don't so much care that some artist smashes a guitar as that it's a case of "been there, done that X 10,000 times" theatrics. If the whole thing is just an act, donate it. And if you're really that angry, deal with it: learn how to tame your emotions. Then learn how to fix the balky amp or PA and donate the guitar you would have smashed had you not learned how to handle emotion in a postive way.

Nice point but kind of misdirected. Most Rock artists (the foks that break stuff up) aren't smashing marching band or symphonic band instruments. That's the type of instruments the schools are in desperate need of.

I remember as a teen I would see The Who and Jimi destroy their guitars and it would kill me. I wanted one so badly. "Instead of destroying it, give it to me!!"

I wouldn't smash a guitar myself, but sometimes you can see a sign on my door: "Practicing guitar. Beware of flying amplifier". But seriously, I don't like seeing artists smash guitars, but they own 'em, they can smash 'em if they want.

I personally don't mind having some wear on an instrument, to show all the "years of service" it's been through. But I'd never think of destroying one, cheap or expensive. Just seems wrong! :x

I couldn't help but cringe at the scene in "The Tooth Fairy" (I think that was it), where the kid gets enraged and smashes his American Strat on the ground. I know it wasn't real (you could tell, the neck was perfectly OK, just detached from the body), but the thought of an instrument like that being smashed just gave me the willies. :!:

I have made this statement many times before but here it is again in condensed form.Although we are present owners of our guitars,a well cared for guitar could conceivably last centuries and bring joy to many generations of musicians. It is in the interest of subsequent owners that I give all my instruments kid glove treatment with hopes that they will bring enjoyment and inspiration to many over their lifetime.BTW this is why I do't alter guitars either I want players to hear it as the maker intended it to be heard. After all who wants a 54 Strat with Gibson humbuckers stuck in it?

I cringed at first, but then realized that he didn't really smash it. Some really nice Fenders in that movie!

Two of my favorite things, Hockey & Fender Guitars, in one movie :D

I've done it to a Crescent strat-copy before because it sounded like $@!& and pissed me off onstage. It was picked up on the cheap at a pawn shop the day of a show, when our expedition with my guitars, a Cube, a Musicman Bass and a PA were in it.
