So... anyone else out there who cannot stand it when an "artist" destroys a guitar or other instrument? I don't care if it's a White Falcon or a $29 Kiddie Guitar I can't stand to see any instrument smashed. I find it wasteful and honestly think it's cheap theatrics and gets in the way of the music. IMHO, every instrument has some quality that makes it different and those differences need to be used, not destroyed. How about donating the instrument to a school that needs it or to some kid trying to learn who can't afford it?

Even Pete & Jimi at Monterey. Imagine the music that would have been made (not to mention the money) had those Strats not been destroyed.

On another note, I know so many people with perfectly good guitars who bought them, never learned, and leave them in a closet/attic/basement. Whenever I'm at their houses I ask to play them so they don't warp/deteriorate from non-use. In a couple of cases, they have been sent home with me on permanent loan (until they decide to learn, which they usually don't).

I have posted this on other forums before and have heard some interesting takes on this.

I'm with John Hiatt on this one myself. "It breaks my heart, to see those stars, smashing a perfectly good guitar."

What's your .02?

Instrument destruction??? Perfectly fine as long as it is not MY instrument. Otherwise, knock yourself out. There are plenty of Les Pauls and Strats to go around for the rest of us ...

I hate to see it too. Just think of all the kids and adults that can't afford a guitar, but would love to play one. If you're thinking about breaking it, why not give it to someone that would cherish it for the rest of their lives.

There are several good programs for old/used guitars :

This is a good one

Its diffrent for other bands, green day, they do it to look "cool", and to be honest watching them smash there instruments is boring. take another band, eg nirvana. They did it with feelings, to express what there feeling at that exact moment. Personally i've been tempted to smash my guitar out of frusteration alot of times, but i wouldn't do it unless i got really frusterated in front of people and i had alot of money. Also, most of the artist that do do it, notice how they get another cheap guitar thats not there favourite?

They smash guitars because they would get their a$$es kicked by a person if they tried to act tough...they are just clowns in my opinion.
Sorry fellas...that is just ont thing I really hate to see.

I've never seen it at a concert thankfully. Once in '93 I saw Chris Cornell throw his Gibson Explorer or Firebird into the bass drum. That's about it.

Anytime it's been even pantomimed or I've seen it on a video my heartrate goes up and I get so angry.

There's vids all over YouTube of people destroying guitars, and a lot of them either don't play or don't know what they have.

Every guitar can be used IMHO.

It kills me to think of all of those beautiful strats that Ritchie Blackmore destroyed. He could have easily leaned over and swapped me for my asian strat copy and it would have made the same exact noises. And today I would have something very special that if anyone even thought about scratching I would......

LOLOL

Hey ABS, I had an appt at the hospital today with a female civilian-type NP who recently transferred from Benning. She's a tarheel and thought she remembered you from the clinic at MACH.

Small world, eh?

Personally, I think it is a disgrace but then again, they are the owners and I guess that's their right. The same thing can be said about those who gravitate towards purchasing deliberately mutilated, "factory fresh" instruments for that matter. The part here that makes me laugh though is when an owner of one of these gets all bent out of shape when they accidentally put one of their own non-factory dings or whatever into it.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.

I take it from your screen name you are a fellow Bostonian. Greetings!

There's a vid from the late 70's with Rainbow where Ritchie destroys a beautiful Strat. It's just awful!
