So my first gig with the new band is now the 30th this month. I gave the old band leader his notice and he wanted to know why I was leaving.
When I told him, he was alright with it; we've worked together for the past 10 years, so we know each other pretty well. That made me wonder-what are some bad habits that the other guys in your band have that piss you off, but you overlook it because you like to play in a band.
Case in point-our old Bass player would play the songs in the wrong key and swear he was right, or forget the chords all together..., we've played the same songs for ten years now. The drummer, a graduate of some drum college in California, had a real tempo problem sometimes-everything got faster. He was always on his cell phone, even between songs. We used to call our singer "arrangements while you wait", because he would sing a song differently every night. Band members getting so drunk they can't play well, disapearing when it's time to load the trailer,
letting their buddies get up and sing and play, even if they couldn't carry a tune.
What's some of yours?

When I was in a punk band, we had to teach our bassist the songs every week we played. Although we didn't overlook it for too long.

I once played in a band with a bassist whose Trash-Iddiot amp would crap out with amazing regularity. We all grew weary of packing Crazy Glue and duct tape along to every gig just to keep that POFS running.

I was in a band with a terrible drummer, one night we played a song where it stopped and he led us back in with a drum roll of some sort...it didn't happen and we all just turned around and he was sitting there lighting a cigarette and said what the &*^%$ are y'all looking at?
I told him I was looking to see where the drummer went to.

That darned guitar player who keeps noodling between songs at practice. It is so annoying when someone is trying to comment or point out a change thats needed in the song. I don't let it bother me too much when they throw things at me because they can't get my attention...

That describes me... I'm the guy who noodles away between songs... usually because I can't keep still and I have to be doing something

A guy that I used to jam with always seemed to forget whether a part of a song has a major or minor chord and inevitably played the wrong one oblivious to the fact but it was pretty obvious to everyone else and no number of reminders sank in,it's like he got into his own little vibe.

That describes me 110 %

really annoys the lads

other than that the other guitarist is always trying to throw his weight around and be the "leader". is annoying sometimes cos we decided early on a democratic system within the band.

Where do I start.....

Lead singer/lyricist who never delivered the lyrics on time for a new song.
Same singer calling 5 minutes before practice to say he can't make it yet he can make any appointment that involves drinking or gambling.
Lead Guitarist who won't turn his amp up so he can be heard, also hasn't learnt to use his pedal board and then blames his amp. Keeps same terrible sound all the time.
I agree with a lot of you guys on the noodling between songs, our last bass player did it as well as our current drummer.

Finally, our last bass player got no support whatsoever from his wife, she had no interest in his love for playing and being in a band and never let him out for practice. We had to replace him recently which was a shame but he should have stood up to her a bit more.

It's bad that everybody wants to be guitar slingers.
It's really hard to find good bass players and drummers in the area where I live because they're already in bands.
If I was starting over ...which I'm not 'cause I'm too old,I would really try to learn to play drums if I could, bass doesn't suit me.
One of my sons can play guitar, bass and he started out on drums so when I get back into it,he's going to do one or the other....you can set your watch to his timing. :D

As far as annoying habits....former bandmates tell me I can be too agressive and take over too much at times....me...imagine that.

agressive is one thing but stepping up to the plate and leading things when nobody else is doing it is another. somebody has to when nobody will.
