Hi Lady VA you are certainly a gem for being so considerate of your father by putting his needs first, there's not many young folks these days that would be so dedicated and selfless.RE the SG granted they tend to be neck heavy but a wide strap does counter that somewhat but you have to be aware at all times that letting go of the neck could have dire consequences. The weight and density of the neck is part of what gives the SG such great sustain.I believe that I mentioned this before but the Epiphone G-400 Custom(3 humbucker SG body)is a very versatile and well made guitar for about 1/4 the price of a Gibson SG well worth a try out.Good Luck and prayers for you and your Dad.

Weight being a consideration you might want to take a look at the Gibson Les Paul Studio Faded Mahogany. I have one and it comes in at a tad under 6.5 lbs.

LVA,

Good luck with the safari. While you are there trying all the guitars on your list, check out the Fender Stratocaster Highway 1 and American Special HSS's. They may also be right up your alley as well. Mine are not too terribly heavy and a nice 3 inch strap will help with distributing the weight better. Can't wait to hear the tales from the GC bush country.

Okay, didn't have time to take pics in the store, but I was surprised I walked away with a guitar.

The guy who waited on me was really nice. He helped me with the guitars, picked out the ones I had on my list and made suggestions, and hooked me up with the amp I have. Also, he got me some used ones to try out (didn't even think about that. Although there was a used Gibson--a Warrior I think...it had a weird Gibson logo on it with a heart...that screamed pretty good. However, it just didn't feel right in my hands. It was like an SG and pretty beat up). I tried Fenders (3-4 of them but they didn't sound really any different than what I have), a PRS, and a Gibson SG and les paul jr. I was actually trying the PRS and the Gibson SG and deciding between them.

Sadly, my new guitar is not a Fender. It's not a Gibson either.

The guy said, "here, I think I know what you want. Let me make a suggestion."

He brought out a Schecter
This is it online http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Schecter-Guitar-Research-C1-Standard-Electric-Guitar?sku=584529

I got it in red.

He said this might work. I plugged it in, and I felt like Harry Potter in Ollivanders. That guitar just worked. The sound was awesome. The fretboard was easy to handle. It even has a pull out knob to make it sound like my Fender Squier strat but with a humbucker.

I had a coupon so I got 60 dollars off the price. He brought out a gig bag if I wanted one (since it didn't come with it and gave me about 20 off that--he quoted me a price but the case he got was more expensive so he stuck with lower price. It's a Road Runner case).

I got 30 days to decide if I want to keep it.

I'm glad I didn't get this other guy though. He was mad I bought the Schecter. I think he was an assistant manager because he was kind of sticking it to me and the guy waiting on me. "All that time for a Schecter?" The guy who waited on me said, "hey, if it's good enough for Peter Murphy and the Cure, it's good to be played. That brand has been around the block for awhile. It's basically Gibson parts with a different top. Plus, it's more versatile in sound and durability."

Hey, my sister heard of Schecter and she doesn't know jack about guitars.

So, nyah.

So he shined it up for me, went over all the parts with me and inspected it with me, put it in the gig bag for me, gave the standard picks with the GC logo on it and I got it.

All in all, a great experience. Plus I got the transvestite manager to welcome me to the store. So it was a good day.

Congratulations on your new axe LVA!! You got the one you liked and felt right to you. Also, you played it through the same amp you own. :) Did they do a free set up for you or were you ok with the way she's set? It sure feels good to walk out with a new guitar under your arms doesn't it?!!! :) Cool! 8) Looking forward to pictures, Now rock on girl!!

She sounded fine the way she was. He did a set up for me (he didn't say but I think he just did anyway--there was no buzzing in the strings and the fretboard was clean, no sharp edges or anything). It was the last one in the store I think. They didn't have the blue one but I was dead set on red (or dark cherry or whatnot). To me, it sounded fine as is. If I want something done, I'll go to the mom and pop store down the street.

LVA, I'm glad, I am really glad that you found something that you liked enough to buy it right away. With the thirty days trial, you also have a fail safe plan which is good. In the next weeks you might find a few small details that you don't like, but no guitar is perfect to fit everyones expectations. It is also easier to totally bond with a guitar when it is a case of love at first sight. I logged on the Schecter site and looked for the C-1 Standard and found it to be a quite attractive guitar. You fell in love with the sound too so it's a win win situation. Someday you might want to buy a more good looking, better sounding, different guitar. Everyone does that, it is a normal process, but your Schecter will always be that special guitar. Now strap that beast on your shoulder in front of a mirror and feel the pride, look at yourself and say the mantra "Nobody will make me dislike my Schecter". Not to convince yourself but to help you cope with the sad people who always bash on others stuff. I can't wait to see pics, again enjoy your new gear LVA. :D

Pics of my newest in the herd. The pictures don't do the color justice. It's more of a deep red.
