Ignoring the economic considerations of splitting gig money with one more performer, is just one guitarist in a band sufficient? In your music, is there enough sonic space for two guitarists, all their gear and potentially inflated egos? ;-) As guitarists, do we welcome the interplay (and learning) between ourselves and another guitarist or is that just one too many roosters in the hen house?

having to write music for two guitarists is too much trouble. i can handle rhythm and lead well enough on my own. an extra guitarist would just get in the way.

I dig the inter-play between 2 really good axe men.
egos need to get parked at the door.

2 guitars can do some really cool things.

sonic territory is wide open as long as you both play by the rules.

What stinks is 2 bad axe men trying to out volume each other.

To be honest, it all depends on your situation. Sometimes two guitarist are too much if both guys are stepping on each other. Working together, you really could have more that 2 and things will work.

As for your situation when $$$ come into play. I'd say do what's best for the gig and to make the most amount of money at it.

no, i have 2 guitarists in my band.
it helps if we're playing faster stuff, we can pull off those minor 3rds and 4ths with ease.

I usually say two guitarists in a band, unless you're a really "loud" (that's not the right word but I can't think of any other one) guitarist.

I love having a second guitarist around and actually prefer it. A lot of my favorite tunes involve twin guitar work like Scorpions or Maiden. Harmony lines are so much fun.

Until recently, I have always been the only guitarist in my bands. In my current band I have had to step up to the mic as a front man, and have had another guitarist. I have really enjoyed weaving guitar parts together with him, and it made a huge difference to our sound. The trouble is, is that he is moving back to the UK, so once again I'm on my own, and wondering how I can make myself sound like 2 guitarists and sing!!!

IMO there is nothing better then the power trio, however I think multiple guitarists can co-exist.

I played with another guitarist. We were best friends when it all began, but he started tripping on ego. I am too laid back and just wanted to enjoy playing the music and do my part best I could.

I'd say a trio any day (look at RUSH). But there are bands who are doing fine with two guitarists.

Did I mention we are no longer friends?

I'm going to be sharing an apartment with two other guitar players when I go back to college. We are planning on starting a band. I'm interested in seeing how it will turn out. We are probably just going to have to trade off bass and guitar. Maybe throw a keyboard in there or something. I've seen a few bands pull that off pretty good.
